Why worship an idol when God has loved us?

šŸ› Daily Prayer: "Help us against it and may we now come boldly, not into the holy place alone, but into the holiest of all, where we should not dare to come if our great Lord had not ripped the veil, sprinkled the mercy seat with his own blood, and bidden us enter."

DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

What have we to do with idols any more? You have seen and observed us. You know where the difficulty lies. Help us against it and may we now come boldly, not into the holy place alone, but into the holiest of all, where we should not dare to come if our great Lord had not ripped the veil, sprinkled the mercy seat with his own blood, and bidden us enter.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

ā€œTherefore, put to death what belongs to your earthly nature: ā€¦greed, which is idolatry.ā€ (Colossians 3:5)

You notice that covetousness is put down with the most filthy sins, and it is described as idolatry. The desire to possess the goods that belong to others, the lust to get gain at any price, this is idolatry.

May God give us grace to kill these loathsome things at once, for if thoughts of evil are indulged, they soon become acts of evil, and then who knows how far we may go in the way of unholiness? Sin, if allowed to grow in the heart, will soon take gigantic strides and come out in the life.

Say no to complaining (and other ā€œacceptableā€ sins)

Todayā€™s verse of the day encouraged us to say to the the idols of covetousness or greed. This is a heinous sin, but it often goes on unchecked in our churches and in our lives. Thatā€™s not okay ā€” when we persist in greed, weā€™re persisting in unrepentant sin.

Greed isnā€™t the only sin that we often give a pass to. There are many sins that we allow, because they arenā€™t as obvious as others. I love the book Respectable Sins by Jerry Bridges. This book will unveil some of these ā€œacceptableā€ sins in your own life and guide you on a path, fueled by Godā€™s grace, to slay them.

In addition to greed, the book touches on complaining, pride, anger, anxiety, and more. In short, no one has room to hide while reading Respectable Sins.

This book will help you see your sin with biblical clarity and fight your sin with God-fueled strength. I hope youā€™ll grab a copy and so no to idols today.
