DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

We long now to get right away from the world, even from the remembrance of it, and have fellowship with the world to come by speaking with him that was, and is, and is to come, the Almighty. Lord, we have been worried and wearied often, but with you, worry comes to an end. When we live in you, we live in wealth, in sure rest, in constant joy. May any who are anxious, but are missing the mark, looking to themselves instead of to Christ, learn the way of life and run in it. Save them, oh God; yes, save us.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6)

See how the apostle would bid us throw anxiety to the winds; let us try to do so. You cannot turn one hair white or black, fret as you may. It will be for your own advantage and it will be for God’s glory for you to shake off the anxieties which otherwise might overshadow your spirit. Be anxious about nothing, but prayerful about everything, and be thankful about everything as well. Isn't that a beautiful aspect of Paul’s character? He is a prisoner at Rome, and likely soon to die; yet he mingles thanksgiving with his supplication, and asks others to do the same. We have always something for which to thank God, therefore let us also obey the command.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Dhund of Pakistan.

The Dhund are a group of 751,000 Muslims in Northern Pakistan. There has never been a Dhund Christian and there are no churches that speak their language. The Bible has not been translated into their language. If they are going to hear the gospel, someone will have to bring it to them from the outside.

Pray that God would send missionaries to the Dhund of Pakistan.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

Don’t believe in “Something” — Believe in Christ*

We don’t need a vague idea that things will get better — we need nothing less than solid hope on the firm foundation of Jesus. Only Christ can satisfy — only Christ is dependable for today, tomorrow, and forever.

Recently, I read a book, Somethingism by Luke Cawley, that invites us to go beyond vague belief in “something” to a more concrete and long-lasting confidence in Christ, risen from the dead.

This book doesn’t just make Christianity seem reasonable, but wonderful too. Luke casts the work of Jesus in a new light that really helped me remember the significance of our Savior’s work.

I needed the message of Somethingism. This book came at the perfect time in a season of discouragement to remind me that the message of Jesus really is real, and true, and dependable. He really is the Savior that we need.

This really is a great resource to strengthen your own faith and joy in Christ AND to equip you to share with others. I walked away from the book (which I read in one sitting because I could not put it down!) feeling so confident and ready to share the good news with new vigor.

Somethingism is an important book. We need to make sure the message of this book spreads — and one of the best ways to support a new book is by pre-ordering it. Thankfully, my friends at the Good Book Company have set up a special offer — you can pre-order this book for 30% off with code SPURGEON.

You should read this book if you want to deepen your own confidence in Christ.

You should read this book if you know anyone who believes in “god” (or “something”), but isn’t sure if the gospel really is good news.
