DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Lord, we have a burden which we must now lay before you and ask you to help us in it. We mourn over the condition of your church; for on every side as we look around, we see men endeavoring to undermine the doctrines of the everlasting gospel. There was a time when a man was famous for lifting up his axe upon the trees of the forest; but now many with axes break down the carved work of your sanctuary—they despoil your truth. There is scarcely a single doctrine of your word which the wise men among us do not deny. And those that pretend to be the ministers of the gospel are amongst the first to speak against it, and to denounce it, and to sanction license to sin because you won’t punish certain vices anymore or to declare that Jesus Christ is not your Son.

Lord God, our heart often sinks within us; we want to lay our hand upon the ark to steady it, for the oxen shake it; but we know that it is in your hand; and having spread the case before you, we leave it there. Many a Rabshakeh’s letter have we read of late: behold, we bring it into the sanctuary and spread it before the Lord. Lord our God, rebuke the unbelief, rebuke the skepticisms of those who assail both you and your Christ, and the gospel of your truth.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“Send your light and your truth; let them lead me. Let them bring me to your holy mountain, to your dwelling place.” (Psalm 43:3)

The joy of your presence and the faithfulness of your heart; let both of these be revealed to me. Reveal my true character by your light and reward me according to your truthful promise. As the sun shines forth his beams, so the Lord sends forth his favor and his faithfulness towards all his people; and as all nature rejoices in the sunshine, even so the saints triumph in the manifestation of the love and fidelity of their God, which, like the golden sunbeam, lights up even the darkest surroundings with delightful splendor.
