DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Our Father God, we wish to speak with you as a man speaks with his friend. But who are we that we should draw near to you, for at best we are but dust and ashes? Yet we come through him who is our Friend, who long ago introduced us to you and has given us permission to use his name with you. You know him well. He is your only-begotten Son, the well-beloved of your heart. He is very dear to us, but he is dearer still to you. We do remember well when you received us at the gate of the house, with all your Fatherly compassion, when you did, for his dear sake, “accept us in the Beloved.” Many days have passed since then; they have been happy days, days of rest compared with that wretched time in the far-off country when we wasted our substance and were like a waste ourselves.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.” (John 14:14)

Imagine that you should say to me, you who keep a warehouse in the city, “Call at my office, using my name, and say that they are to give you such a thing.” I would go in and use your name, and I would obtain my request as a matter of right and a matter of necessity. This is virtually what Jesus Christ says to us. “If you need anything from God, all that the Father has belongs to me; go and use my name.”

Suppose you gave a man your checkbook signed with your own name and left blank, to be filled up as he chose. That would be very nearly what Jesus has done in these words, “If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.” If I had a good name at the bottom of the check I would be sure that I would get it cashed when I went to the banker with it. So when you have Christ’s name, to whom the very justice of God has become a debtor, and whose merits have claims with the Most High—when you have Christ’s name there is no need to speak with fear and trembling and bated breath.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Bokoruge of Chad.

The ethnic group of about 125,000 have likely never heard the name of Jesus/. They have no Bible in their language or churches in their area. HOWEVER, missionaries are laboring among them right now to share the gospel for the first time.

Pray that the missionaries among the Bokoruge would be faithful.
