DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Our gracious God, we do not only need to confess our sin, but we also need to ask for innumerable favors from you. We need to be comforted, for we are often bowed down. We may need to be sobered, for our heart runs astray after the idols of the world. It may be that today we are dull and heavy; give us the Holy Spirit that we may be quick and living and joyful in your house of prayer. Whatever it is that ails us, oh Lord our healer, lay your healing hand upon us. If in anything we have need, oh Lord our provider, may it be seen that the Lord does provide.

Bless your people here. Here are many of your servants who delight to do your will, but they are, perhaps, somewhat weary. Lord, refresh them. For this is true rest and this is true refreshing: that we come and feed on Jesus Christ the heavenly bread.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“Then they said, ‘Sir, give us this bread always.’ ‘I am the bread of life,’ Jesus told them. ‘No one who comes to me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in me will ever be thirsty again.’” (John 6:34–35)

These were the very people whom he had fed on the other side of the sea; yet they were craving for more. That kind of bread cannot stay their hunger for long. They had not received him as their Savior, or they would have been content with him and would have asked for nothing more.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Ampanang of Indonesia.

The Ampanang believe in many spirits, but they do not know the one true God. How can they hear about him without the Bible, which has never been translated into their language?

Pray that God would send faithful Bible translators to the Ampanang.

Give your kids better heroes than the world has to offer*

While the world celebrates movie stars, singers, and socialites, we need to give our kids better heroes — missionaries, martyrs, and men and women of God.

That’s why I’m really thankful that The Voice of the Martyrs is GIVING AWAY free copies of their picture book biography of the Apostle Thomas.

This simple book tells the story of how “Doubting Thomas” was filled with faith by the power of God and became one of the church’s first missionaries — bringing the gospel all the way to India. The story of Thomas’ life is a POWERFUL testimony of the greatness of the risen Christ. And this book is a great retelling of it that you kids will love.

Whether you already have a house bursting with books or this is just the start of your family’s library, I know your kids will enjoy reading “Thomas” with you.
