DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

We recognize that we are totally dependent on you when we come to deal with spiritual things. Oh God, we are less than nothing in the spiritual world. We feel our need for you more every day and yet even to feel this is beyond our power. Your grace must help us even to know our need for grace. We are not willing to confess our own sinfulness until you show it to us. Though it stares us in the face, our pride denies it, and our own inability is not perceived by us. We steal your power and call it our own until you compel us to say that we have no strength in ourselves. Now, Lord, we acknowledge that all good must come from you, through Jesus Christ by your Spirit, if we are ever to receive it.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“He humbled you by letting you go hungry; then he gave you manna to eat, which you and your ancestors had not known, so that you might learn that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.” (Deuteronomy 8:3)

It is a wonderful thing to be delivered from materialism, to be freed from the notion that things are absolutely essential for the accomplishment of the divine purpose. If God had so willed it, we could have been nourished by air. Although the Lord has chosen to feed us bread, our real life does not live on bread but on the word that proceeds from the mouth of God.

That which we can see may fail us, for it is, like us, a shadow. But the one we cannot see will never fail us. If we lean on his arm, we will never be ashamed, world without end.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Ampanang of Indonesia.

In recent years, the Ampanang have become more open to outsiders, but a Christian missionary has never brought the good news of Jesus to them.

Pray that faithful missionaries would bring the gospel to the Ampanang.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

FREE Kids Book: A gift for Pray with Spurgeon readers*

This month, my friends at The Voice of the Martyrs are giving away FREE copies of their picture book on “Doubting Thomas.” Grab your free copy here.

Though he is known as “Doubting Thomas,” this apostle became so convinced of the resurrection of Jesus Christ that he took the gospel to India, where he died as a martyr at the hands of Hindu priests. Thomas’ story is a great example — EXACTLY the kind of hero that I want my kids to know about, celebrate, and follow after.

The book is a clear, simple telling of the story of Thomas that keeps kids really engaged.

Plus, full-page illustrations that show the realities of the resurrection and the idolatry that Thomas encountered in India. It’s a book your kids will be asking for again and again
 and it’s free!!

I hope you’ll grab your free copy of Thomas and add it to your family’s library.
