DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Oh, glorify yourself in us! Dear Savior, come and mark us all with your blood because we are wholly yours. From now on may we say with Paul, “From now on, let no one cause me trouble, because I bear on my body the marks of Jesus” (Galatians 6:17). As we have been buried with you by baptism into death so would we be dead to all the world and only live for Christ. God grant it may be so and we will glorify you in life, and death, and forever.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“You are not your own, for you were bought at a price. So glorify God with your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20)

If we are not our own, then we have no right to serve ourselves. The person who is living entirely for himself, whose chief goal is his own ease, comfort, honor, or wealth—what does he know about redemption by Christ? If our aims rise no higher than our personal advantages, we are false to the fact that we “were bought at a price;” we are traitors to him in whose redemption we pretend to share.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Tubu of Chad.

Every Tubu man considers himself a warrior. Violence, fighting between clans, and even revenge killings are common among them. They need to know Jesus, the prince of peace.

Pray that Jesus would be proclaimed among the Tubu for the first time.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

A simple book about our big pride problem.

This week, as we think and pray about how to glorify God in our lives, we need to realize how often we try to put the spotlight onto ourselves. While most of us don’t like to admit it, we like to be seen, appreciated, and celebrated. This is pride. And it’s dangerous.

A wonderful book that shows you how glorious God is and challenges you to live for HIS fame, not your own is Glory Hunger: God, the Gospel, and Our Quest for Something More by JR Vassar. This short book will expose your pride and help you chart a bold, gospel-focused course to live for the praise of Jesus, not yourself.

This book is a challenging, encouraging read. I can’t wait to hear how God uses it in your life.
