DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Lord, will you help any of your children who are very sorely burdened. When you lay a burden on us, give us strength equal to it; and if the burden should press heavier and heavier, hold the everlasting arms even more consciously underneath us. Remember those of us who have recently been bereaved. They lately had the sentence of death in themselves, by reason of sore disease of body. Help, strengthen, comfort, deliver. The widow and the fatherless are always under your care. Look, most tender and compassionate Lord, upon all who are in any trouble of mind, body, or estate; and let the rich comforts of the Comforter himself be dispensed to them.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they?” (Matthew 6:26)

The birds are fed by God; will he not feed us? They are free from the fret which comes from hoarding and trading; why shouldn’t we be? If God feeds the birds of the air without sowing, or reaping, or storing, surely he will supply us when we use these means in faith. For us to rely upon these means and forget our God would be folly indeed. Our King would have his subjects give their hearts to his love and service, and not worry themselves with grovelling anxieties. It is well for us that we have these daily needs because they lead us to our heavenly Father; but if we grow anxious, these daily needs are turned from their design and made into barriers to shut us out from the Lord. May we be as good as the birds in trust, since in the dignity of nature we are “worth more than they!”

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Bushi of Mayotte.

Islam is very closely tied to the identity of the Bushi people. Many can’t imagine life apart from being a Muslim.

Pray that the truth of Christ would reach their island and then reach their hearts.
