DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Lord God, we see in your crucified Son a sacrifice for sin; we see how you have made him to be sin for us so that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. We still accept him to be everything to us. This is the victim by whose blood the covenant is made through faith; this is that Passover Lamb by the sprinkling of whose blood all Israel is secured; for you have said, “when I see the blood, I will pass over you” (Exodus 12:13). This is the blood which gives us access to that which is within the veil; this is the blood which now is true drink to our souls. We rejoice in the joy which this new wine of the covenant has given to our spirits.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“Then one of the elders said to me, ‘Do not weep. Look, the Lion from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered…’ Then I saw one like a slaughtered lamb standing in the midst of the throne…” (Revelation 5:5–6)

He was a lamb when he became incarnate, submitted to his parents, welcomed little children, suffered the spite of people, and died for the unjust. He was a lion when he conquered Satan in the wilderness, performed miracles, resisted to the point of bloodshed, won victory on the tree, and rose triumphant from the dead. He is a lamb now, interceding, pleading, and bearing with the sons of men. He is a lion now, protecting his people against Satan. In the end, when every saint is saved, he will show himself to be a lion in the judgment of his foes and in his triumphant entrance into heaven, leading “the captives captive” (Ephesians 4:8).

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Faifi of Saudi Arabia.

Many younger Faifi people are leaving home for better employment opportunities. Perhaps some of them will encounter Christians while away from home, get saved, and return home as missionaries.

Pray that God would save Faifi young people who have left home.

God’s grace sets us free from sin

This week we are focusing on Christ as the lamb of God, the savior whose blood was shed in our place. It’s important to remember that the cross was not the end of the Lamb’s work for us (as today’s Verse of the Day highlighted so well!) — Christ is STILL at work for our good. No matter how many times we sin, we find his grace to be an inexhaustible ocean.

At the same time, God’s grace is NOT about forgiving our sin and leaving us stuck; it’s about empowering you to actually change. The book Unlimited Grace by Bryan Chappell will show you how wonderfully large and never-ending God’s grace is, and how this grace has the power to change your life from the inside out.

I know this book will encourage you and fill your heart with love and gratitude for God’s grace. If you’re feeling discouraged and shameful about your past sin, this book will assure of God’s never-ending kindness towards sinners. If you’re feeling stuck and unmoved in your present sin, this book will help you to lean into the power of God’s grace to change.

FAITH’S CHECKBOOK

Spurgeon’s classic devotional, The Chequebook of the Bank of Faith, contains a promise of God for every day of the year. Pray with Spurgeon Plus subscribers receive the daily readings every weekday.

“I will make a covenant of peace with them and eliminate dangerous creatures from the land, so that they may live securely in the wilderness and sleep in the forest.” (Ezekiel 34:25)

It is the height of grace that the Lord should be in covenant with people who are feeble, sinful and dying creatures. Yet the Lord has solemnly entered into a faithful union with us and he will never turn aside from that covenant. In virtue of this covenant we are safe. As lions and wolves are driven off by shepherds, so shall all harmful temptations be chased away. The Lord will give us rest from disturbers and destroyers; the evil beasts shall cease from the land. Lord, make this promise true even now!

The Lord’s people will enjoy security in places of the greatest exposure; wildernesses and woods will be like pastures and folds to the flock of Christ. If the Lord does not change our place for the better, he will make us better in that place. The wilderness is not a place to dwell in but the Lord can make it so; in the woods one feels bound to watch rather than to sleep, and yet the Lord gives his beloved sleep even there. Nothing without or within should cause any fear to the child of God. By faith the wilderness can become the suburbs of heaven, and the woods the chamber of glory.

Something to think about today if you’re feeling afraid about your circumstances: Who can harm you when God has promised to protect?

LAST WORD FROM SPURGEON

“The enthroned Lamb himself is all the heaven we desire.” — Charles Spurgeon
