DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Because of truth and righteousness, shepherd of Israel, deal a heavy blow at the wolves and keep your sheep in their own true pastures, free from the poisonous pastures of error. Oh God we would stir you up. We know that you are not asleep, and yet sometimes it seems as if you did sleep a while and leave things to go on in their own way. We beg you to awake. Plead your own cause. We know your answer, “Awake! awake! Put on your strength, oh Zion.” This we would do, Lord, but we cannot do it unless you put forth your strength to turn our weakness into might.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“The LORD is my shepherd; I have what I need.” (Psalm 23:1)

There is a noble tone of confidence about this sentence. There is no “if” nor “but,” nor even “I hope so;” but he says, “The Lord is my shepherd.” We must cultivate the spirit of assured dependence upon our heavenly Father. The sweetest word of the whole is that monosyllable, “My.” He does not say, “The Lord is the shepherd of the world at large, and leadeth forth the multitude as his flock,” but “The Lord is my shepherd;” if he is a Shepherd to no one else, he is a Shepherd to me; he cares for me, watches over me, and preserves me.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Zaghawa of Chad.

The Zaghawa became Muslim in the 1940’s when Muslim missionaries passed through Chad on their way to Mecca. They have believed a lie for nearly one hundred years while no Christians have ever brought them the truth.

Pray that the Zaghawa would hear the gospel and be saved.

CShepherd your kids

Parents, God has entrusted HIS sheep to you. We have a responsibility to shepherd our children towards Christ, pointing them to the truth and protecting them from lies. If you want to be a faithful shepherd in your home, you need to read the Bible to your kids.

How else will you point your kids to Jesus if they never hear from Jesus himself in the Word?

How will your kids know God if they never hear from God’s self-revelation?

How can you claim to shepherd your kids without bringing them to the green pastures of the Bible?

If you want to get started reading and discussing the Bible as a family, or if you want to get more intentional in reading the Bible together, check out God Centered Family, my series of family devotionals covering the entire Bible.

These devotionals are a trustworthy source to shepherd your kids to Christ. Here’s what makes them unique:

  • Cover the Whole Bible — Teach every verse of Scripture (not just the popular stories)

  • Interactive — Train kids to read the Bible for themselves (not just sit through it)

  • Focused on Jesus — We’re saved by God’s grace (not our good works)

  • Realistic — Only ten minutes each day
