DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Throughout this year, all of our path has been strewn with mercies, and we desire this morning to record, ā€œBless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits,ā€ (Psalm 103:2).

We thank you now in retrospect for the trials which we have endured. Some of us have been brought very low with physical pain and mental weariness, and others have been sorely smitten with bereavement, losses, and crosses, and persecutions, but there is not one out of all our trials which we could have afforded to have been without.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

ā€œIt is good to give thanks to the LORDā€¦ā€ (Psalm 92:1)

It is good ethically, for it is the Lord’s right; it is good emotionally, for it is pleasant to the heart; it is good practically, for it leads others to render the same homage. When duty and pleasure combine, who will be backward? To give thanks to God is but a small return for the great benefits which he daily gives us; yet as he by his Spirit calls it a good thing, we must not despise it, or neglect it. We thank men when they oblige us, how much more ought we to bless the Lord when he benefits us. Devout praise is always good, it is never out of season, never superfluous.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Aimaq of Afghanistan.

The Aimaq are carpet weavers and farmers. Droughts have made their lives very difficult.

Pray that God would provide everything that they need.

Enjoying Jesus with refreshed life

As we think about Thanksgiving, we should all labor to grow our gratitude for Christ himself. He is our greatest blessing.

Have you ever read a book or heard a sermon about Christ that left you slightly skeptical, ā€œCan Jesus REALLY be that good?ā€ Our wandering hearts tend to believe that Christ’s mercy can’t really go as far as our sin has taken us. We doubt his power to save because we don’t really believe that he really is that kind.

It’s so foolish. And that’s why we need solid teaching to constantly retrain our hearts to remember… yes, Jesus REALLY IS that good.

Last year, I read one of those ā€œalmost-too-good-to-be-trueā€ books that is actually true, rooted in biblical truth: Enjoying Jesus by Tim Chester. I’ve been thinking about this book again this week as we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving this week. This book has really helped me to pursue Jesus with renewed gratitude for who he is.

This book is an absolutely breathtaking invitation to ENJOY Christ and his grace, not just know the truth about it. If your faith is feeling stale, if you see that your passion for God is waning, or if you know that prayer is becoming a discipline without delight… the solution is to sit down for a Bible-saturated feast on the goodness of Jesus. And that’s exactly what Enjoying Jesus is.

LAST WORD FROM SPURGEON
