DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. We fear that we often begin our prayer with petitions for ourselves, and put our daily bread before your kingdom and the pardoning of our sins before the hallowing of your name. We would not do so today, but guided by our Lord’s model of prayer, we would first pray for your glory. Here, great God, we would adore you. You have made us and not ourselves. We are your people, the sheep of your pasture. All glory to you, Lord, the only living and true God.
With heart and mind, and memory and fear, and hope and joy, we worship the Most High. It would be fitting for us to take our shoes off when we draw near to God, for the place where we stand is holy ground. If God in the burning bush demanded the unsandaled foot of Moses, how much more shall God in Christ Jesus?
With lowliest reverence, with truest love, we worship God in Christ Jesus, uniting in this with all the redeemed host above, with angels and principalities and powers.
Amen.
VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
“The LORD is great and is highly praised; his greatness is unsearchable.” (Psalm 145:3)
Worship should be somewhat like its object—great praise for a great God. There is no part of the Lord’s greatness which is not worthy of great praise. In some beings greatness is but vastness of evil; in him it is magnificence of goodness. Praise may be said to be great when the song contains great matter, when the hearts producing it are intensely fervent, and when large numbers unite in the grand acclaim. No chorus is too loud, no orchestra too large, no psalm too lofty for the lauding of the Lord of Hosts.
PRAY FOR THE NATIONS
This week, we’re praying for the Bunu of China.
Their language is very complicated, making Bible translation difficult. There is no Bible in their language.
Pray that qualified Bible translators would go to the Bunu and have all of their needs met.
RECOMMENDED RESOURCE
Show your kids the greatness of God
If our kids are going to be fully-devoted followers of Jesus, we need to give them a fully-formed, biblical picture of who God is. Our kids will not lay down their lives for a shadowy, made-up, moralistic example — but, we pray that they would see the greatness of Christ and love him more than life itself.
Showing our kids the greatness of God is a task too great for any of us — we can’t describe God well enough to leave our kids amazed at his wonders. But God is able to describe himself… and he has! In Scripture, God has shown us his greatness across all of history and from eternity to eternity.
Parents, we have a responsibility to show our kids this greatness on every page of Scripture. That’s what God Centered Family is about. This series of family devotionals will give you everything you need to teach your kids the Bible with daily discussions centered on God, not moral examples.
Give your kids a glorious view of God — God Centered Family will give you everything you need.
FAITH’S CHECKBOOK
Spurgeon’s classic devotional, The Chequebook of the Bank of Faith, contains a promise of God for every day of the year. Pray with Spurgeon Plus subscribers receive the daily readings every weekday.

“Then he said, ‘Truly I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.’” (John 1:51)
To our faith this heavenly vision is clear, even today. We do see heaven opened; Jesus himself has opened that kingdom to all believers. We gaze into the place of mystery and glory, for he has revealed it to us and we shall enter it, for he is the way.
Now we see the explanation of Jacob’s ladder. Between earth and heaven there is a holy highway; prayer ascends and answers come down by the way of Jesus the mediator. We see this ladder when we see our Lord. In him, a stairway of light now provides a clear pathway to the throne of the Most High. Let us use it and send the messengers of our prayers up by it. We ourselves shall live the life of angels if we run up to heaven in intercession and lay hold upon the blessings of the covenant and then descend again to scatter those gifts among the sons of men.
This great sight which Jacob only saw in a dream we turn into a bright reality. This very day we will be up and down the ladder each hour; climbing in communion and coming down in labor to save others. This is your promise, oh Lord Jesus, let us joyfully see it fulfilled.
Something to think about today if you’re feeling lonely: Jesus has made a way for you to know God personally.
