DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Oh God, we would not speak to you as from a distance, nor stand like trembling Israel under the law at a distance from the burning mountain, for we have not come unto Mount Sinai, but to Mount Zion, and that is a place for holy joy and thankfulness and not for terror and bondage. Blessed be your name, oh Lord! We draw very near to you now through Jesus Christ the mediator and we make bold to speak to you as a man speaks with his friend, for you have said by your Spirit that we should come boldly to the throne of the heavenly grace (Hebrews 4:16).

We would rightfully flee from your face if we only remembered our sinfulness. Lord, we do remember it with shame and sorrow; we are grieved to think we should have offended you, should have neglected so long your sweet love and tender mercy; but we have now returned unto the “shepherd and overseer of our souls” (1 Peter 2:25). Led by such grace, we look to him whom we crucified and we have mourned for him and then have mourned for our sin.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“Therefore, you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, your name be honored as holy.” (Matthew 6:9)

We have learnt to call God “Our Father in heaven;” so there is reverence, for he is in heaven; but there is sweet familiarity, for he is our Father. We would draw very near to him now through Jesus Christ the Mediator.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Takistani of Iran.

Christians are persecuted in Iran by the government and various other groups. It will be dangerous for missionaries to go to Iran or for Iranian Christians to share their faith with the Takistani, but the gospel must reach them.

Pray that God would protect missionaries going to the Takistani.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

A Resource to Help You Pray in 2024

It seems like every year, I make a new year’s resolution to pray more frequently and more biblically. This is healthy — we should realize our need for prayer more and more every year. Over the last three years, my prayer life has been REALLY blessed by a really great resource, Psalms in 30 Days by Trevin Wax.

This book is a collection of thirty days of prayers (morning, midday, and evening) that includes all 150 psalms and prayers from Scripture and church history. With this book, you can pray through all of the psalms every month.

These prayers are so incredibly fresh, deep, and life-giving, and having a book that is set aside just for prayer is a physical reminder (on your table, shelf, desk, or bedside table) to pray (Plus, the book looks great!)

I’ve been using Psalms in 30 Days for several years and I’m still so thankful for the consistency and power it has brought to my prayer life. If consistency in prayer is a struggle for you, this book is a great tool to help you overcome it. I hope you’ll grab a copy and join me.
