DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
Lord, we once thought that the Bibleās descriptions of the sin in our heart were somewhat exaggerated, but we do not think so any more, for we truly perceive that had it not been for restraint which held us back, in our unregenerate state, we were capable of anything; for, even now, when we are regenerate, the old sin that abides in us is capable of reaching to a high degree of infamy; and if the new life did not restrain the old death, we do not know what we might yet become.
We used to think that we were humble; but we soon found that our pride will feed on any current flattery that is laid at our door. We thought we were believers, but sometimes we are so doubting, so unbelieving, so vexed with skepticism that we should not certainly choose to follow you; that is your work in us. By nature we are such liars that we think that you are a liar too. That is the surest proof of our untruthfulness, that we think that you could be untrue. Oh, this wicked heart of ours! If a spark only falls into it, any one of our members left to itself would dishonor Christ, deny the Lord that bought us, and turn back into perdition.
But we bless you that none can lay anything to the charge of your people, because all were laid on Christ by your own hand.
Amen.
VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
āFor everything in the worldāthe lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in oneās possessionsāis not from the Father, but is from the world.ā (1 John 2:16)
And the pride of lifeāthat thirsting to be thought respectable, that emulation of others, that struggling after honor and such likeāthis must not be. You are men and must āset aside the things of a childā (1 Corinthians 13:11). Do not fall prey to vanities; these toys are for the children of the world, not for you who are so near to the glory of the Lord. You are grown ripe in grace, and will soon enter heaven: live accordingly. Let all earthly things lie like babiesā baubles beneath your feet while you rise to the manhood of your soul.
PRAY FOR THE NATIONS
This week, weāre praying for the Lafofa of Sudan.
Sudan lives in a state of war. They need to know the Prince of Peace who can give them peace with God.
Pray that missionaries would boldly proclaim Jesus to the Lafofa.
RECOMMENDED RESOURCE
A new Bible storybook your family will love
I first heard about The Kingdom and the King Storybook Bible a few years ago and have been looking forward to it with great anticipation. It finally released this week! This book, written by Bob Hartman (author of the Bible App for Kids and The Prisoners, the Earthquake, and the Midnight Song) and illustrated by Catalina Echeverri (of the incredible Tales that Tell the Truth series, including The Garden, the Curtain, and the Cross), features 70 Bible stories that trace the theme of Godās coming kingdom throughout the Old and New Testament.
This book is a monumental achievement that does a great job of helping kids understand the Bibleās big picture. It includes just the right amount of details to keep kids engaged and educated without getting bogged down or boring. And the illustrations are beautiful ā they communicate almost as much as the text does!
I was so thankful to receive a review copy of this book and my family has been thankful to start to dig into this massive resource. I know it will bless your family for years to come.
LAST WORD FROM SPURGEON
āNo matter how dear you are to God, if pride is harbored in your spirit he will whip it out of you.ā ā Charles Spurgeon
