DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

At the remembrance of your great saving work, and being in your presence, we do yet rejoice that our unrighteousness has been covered, we are free from condemnation, and we are the favored of the Lord. You have given us, oh Lord, a taste of that love which is not merely laid up for us, but we have enjoyed it, and do enjoy it still.

Our heart knows the Father’s love, for we have received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, “Abba Father.” And we joy and rejoice in the redemption of our spirits, and we expect the redemption of our bodies, when, at the coming of the Lord they too shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, then how much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life.” (Romans 5:10)

Notice that while we were his enemies, he blessed us, so now that we are reconciled to him, will he not still bless us? If he reconciled us to him by the death of his Son, will he not save us by his life now that we are reconciled to him? Does he make us his friends, intending afterwards to destroy us? Perish such a thought. This verse is like a trident, it is a three-pronged argument for our eternal safety.

THE RESURRECTION FOR PARENTS

This week, Pray with Spurgeon has been focusing on the resurrection of Christ. Many of these prayers have thanked God that we are raised up to life with Christ (Eph 2:6). This is an important reality — our great hope is that we (who once were dead in trespasses and sins, Eph 2:1) have been raised to new life in Christ. This is a salvation reality that is objectively true for anyone who trusts in Christ.

However, the resurrection of Christ can encourage our parenting in other ways too. Just as Jesus endured the cross before receiving the joys and triumphs of resurrection, he calls his people to embrace this same way of life. We are to lay our lives down for the good of others, sacrificing our comfort to serve (2 Cor 5:15), trusting that God will sustain us. As we live a cross-shaped life, God will fill us with resurrection power.

This is a particularly encouraging truth for parents. Parenting is particularly hard work. There are many days when we find ourselves limping over the finish line to get the kids in bed. As we serve our kids, we may feel exhausted, but as we labor day-in and day-out to point them to Jesus, we can trust that God will fuel us with resurrection life.
