DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
Lord, it is an unspeakable mercy to know you—to know you as our reconciled God, to know you as our Father in Christ Jesus, who has forgiven us all our trespasses. It is unspeakably sweet to come and rest in you, and to know that there is now no conflict between us and you; on the contrary, that we are bound to one another by a covenant which in infinite tenderness and mercy you have made, that your people might have strong consolation, and might boldly take hold of you.
Amen.
VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29)
First, we rest by faith in Jesus, and next we rest through obedience to him. Rest from fear is followed by rest from the turbulence of inward passion, and the drudgery of self. We are not only to bear a yoke, but his yoke; and we are not only to submit to it when it is laid upon us, but we are to take it upon us.
PRAY FOR THE NATIONS
This week, we’re praying for the Bidio of Chad.
There are some Christians living in the same region of Chad as the Bidio. There are not many Christians, but they still have a role to play in fulfilling the Great Commission and bringing the gospel to every nation, including the Bidio.
Pray that Chadian Christians would bring the hope of Jesus to the Bidio.
RECOMMENDED RESOURCE
I can’t believe it took me this long to read this book*
Recently, I read the book Tortured for Christ for the first time — the true story of Richard Wurmbrand, a pastor who spent 14 years in Communist prisons for preaching the gospel.
The most shocking thing about this book wasn’t the horrendous torture that Richard endured (to be honest, he doesn’t dwell on that much in his book), but the radical love that he had for his tormenters.
Richard was passionate about defeating Communism — NOT by waging war or winning political debates, but “with the love of Christ.”
What a stunning story of grace, redemption, and faithfulness. You really need to experience it for yourself this summer.
The Voice of the Martyrs is giving away free copies of Tortured for Christ to Pray with Spurgeon subscribers this month (USA only).
Seriously — they will mail the book to you (no strings attached!) for free, because they know that its message is powerful. They know that the church needs this book.
FAITH’S CHECKBOOK
Spurgeon’s classic devotional, The Chequebook of the Bank of Faith, contains a promise of God for every day of the year. Pray with Spurgeon Plus subscribers receive the daily readings every weekday.
If you want to strengthen your faith in God’s promises (and support this ministry!), subscribe to Pray with Spurgeon Plus here.
“Then Amaziah said to the man of God, ‘What should I do about the 7,500 pounds of silver I gave to Israel’s division?’ The man of God replied, ‘The LORD is able to give you much more than this.’” (2 Chronicles 25:9)
If you have made a mistake, bear the loss of it, but do not act contrary to the will of the Lord. The Lord can give you much more than you are likely to lose and if he does not, will you begin bargaining and haggling with God? The king of Judah had hired an army from idolatrous Israel and he was commanded to send the fighting men home because the Lord was not with them. He was willing to send away the army, only he was bitter about paying them thousands of pounds of silver for nothing. This is a shameful way to think! If the Lord will give the victory without the hirelings, surely it was a good bargain to pay their wages and to be done with them.
Be willing to lose money for conscience sake, for peace sake, for Christ’s sake. Rest assured that losses for the Lord are not losses. Even in this life they are more than repaid; in some cases the Lord prevents any loss from happening. As to our immortal life, what we lose for Jesus is invested in heaven. Do not worry when you see disaster looming, but listen to the whisper, “The LORD is able to give you much more than this.”
Something to think about today if you have lost something: The LORD is able to give you much more than this.
