DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Precious Lord Jesus Christ, we adore you with all our hearts. You are the Lord of all. We bless you for becoming man that you might be our next of kin, and being next of kin we bless you for taking us into marriage union with yourself and for redeeming us and our inheritance from the captivity into which we were sold. You have paid your life for your people; you have ransomed your family with your heart’s blood. May you be forever beloved and adored.

Amen.

WHAT IS UNION WITH CHRIST?

Christians are so closely connected to Jesus and identified with Jesus that the Bible describes us as “one” with him. We are united to Jesus in a personal, life-giving, eternal, and real union.

  • This union is personal — we do not merely get benefits from Jesus. We are connected with him in all of his fullness.

  • This union is life-giving — We DO get benefits from Jesus, but never apart from getting Jesus. The way God saves us is by making us one with his Son. We share in all that Jesus has BECAUSE we share in Jesus.

  • This union is eternal. No one will ever be able to separate us from Jesus because we are ONE with him. We are not merely affiliated with him. We’re one.

  • This union is real. This isn’t an idea or abstraction. We’re not merely close to Jesus — we are ONE with Jesus.

Once you see this reality, you’ll see it on every page of the New Testament, especially in the letters of Paul. This is how God saves us. This is your truest identity.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“Blessed is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavens in Christ.” (Ephesians 1:3)

One of the first doctrines of our holy faith is that of the union of all believing souls with Christ. We are blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ. Apart from Christ we are nothing; in Christ we have “every spiritual blessing.” We are rich as Christ is rich, when we are united to him by the living bond of faith.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Nisu in southwestern China.

The Nisu are a tribe of 16,000 people. As far as we know, they have never heard the gospel, they have no Bible in their language, or church that they can attend. They will never hear about Jesus unless someone from the outside brings the gospel to them.

Pray that God would send missionaries to the Nisu.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

This reality really could change your life.

You are one with Jesus.

That is a massive truth that has eternal implications for your life. This defines your identity, empowers your activity, and answers your despair. But, living in a fallen world, it can be hard to grasp just why and how our union with Christ is so important.

The book One with My Lord by Sam Allberry will help you journey into the truth of your union with Christ in a way that is devotional, encouraging, and practical. This book will leave you amazed at how close you are to Jesus, how safe you are in him, and how blessed you are because he is with you.

This is a fantastic introduction to a really crucial doctrine. I hope you’ll grab a copy and be blessed this summer.
