DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

We ask on each Lord’s Day, that we may be in the Spirit, and know the fullness of his quickening power. As our church gathers, may we do nothing after the dead manner of formality. May there be no dead hymn, nor dead prayer. Lord, give the preacher life. Oh, give the hearers life. Oh may this be living worship this morning, the bowing not of heads alone, but of hearts, and the closing not alone of the eyes to things that can be seen, but the closing of the eyelids of thought to everything worldly.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ will not be emptied of its effect.” (1 Corinthians 1:17)

I suppose that, in that church, with its many eloquent speakers and men of knowledge, there came to be a spirit of emulation among them as to which should speak best; and some brethren were tempted to find novel meanings in the Word, and to come to the meetings to tell of their wonderful discoveries. The apostle says that he did not so preach; he kept to the cross of Christ, which some counted to be but foolishness. “We know all about that,” said they. “Ah, but!” replied the apostle, “unto us which are saved it is the power of God.”

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Bafinda of Pakistan.

The Bafinda are devoted Muslims; the only things they have heard about Jesus are the lies about him told in the Quran. They believe they will be saved by their works.

Pray that the true message of Jesus would come to the Bafinda.
