VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“… you were slaughtered, and you purchased people for God by your blood from every tribe and language and people and nation.” (Revelation 5:9)

Blessed be God for this. Some of all sorts are saved, some of all colors, ranks, nations, and ages are saved; some of all conditions of education and morals, some of the poorest, and some of the richest are redeemed so that when we all assemble in heaven, though we make a motley throng on earth, we shall constitute a united choir, having all our voices tuned to this one note, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain.”

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Younuo of China.

The Younuo worship many spirits, as well as the sun and the moon. The Younuo believe that, long ago, a global flood covered the earth. Humans had to sound a gong at the rooftop of the earth to awake the thunder god, who came down to rescue them from the flood.

Pray that the Younuo would hear about the God who really did come to rescue them.

An inspiring biography for kids

This week as we pray for missions, you may find yourself wanting to learn more about missionaries who have gone before us. A great missionary biography for kids is Helen Roseveare: The Doctor Who Kept Going No Matter What by Laura Caputo-Wickham.

This book tells the incredible story of Roseveare’s life as a missionary doctor. It handles some really heavy themes (like illness, death, war, and imprisonment) in an age-appropriate way that will encourage your kids to trust in Christ, no matter what they face. These heavy themes are handled carefully, not giving details that would scare younger kids, while providing opportunity for further conversations with older kids.

Roseveare’s life is an inspiration to me, and I’m so thankful for this great resource to tell the story of her life to my kids.

“The LORD… has turned back your enemy.” (Zephaniah 3:15)

Satan has been cast out. He has lost his throne in our nature even as he lost his seat in heaven. Our Lord Jesus has destroyed the enemy’s power to reign over us. He may worry us, but he cannot claim us as his own. His bonds are no longer upon our spirits; the Son has made us free, and we are free indeed.

He is our arch-enemy, the accuser; but even from this position our Lord has driven him. Our advocate silences our accuser. The Lord rebukes our enemies and pleads the causes of our soul so that no harm comes from all the devil’s revilings.

As a tempter, the evil spirit still attacks us, and slips into our minds; but from there he is cast out from his former place of power. He wriggles about like a serpent, but he cannot rule like a sovereign. He hurls in blasphemous thoughts when he has opportunity; but what a relief it is when he is told to be quiet, and is made to slink off like a beaten dog! Lord, do this for any who are worried and wearied by his barkings. Cast out their enemy and be glorious in their eyes. You have cast him down, Lord, cast him out now. Banish him from the world!

Something to think about today if you’re feeling attacked: God is your protector.
