Pray with Spurgeon

Daily Newsletter from SpurgeonBooks

This week, as the United States navigates an election on Tuesday, our prayers and Scripture readings each day will focus on praying for our country. Next week, we’ll highlight a different theme. Invite a friend to pray with you by sending them this link.

DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

We have also to bring before you a burden and that is the godlessness of this present age. It is not alone the wise men but, behold, the men that know not seek not after God. Oh Lord, the multitude delight in sin. Drunkenness defiles our city, and filthy words are heard on every side. Do not be angry with this nation, we beg you. It has been entrusted with wondrous privileges. Forgive it and have mercy upon its aggravated sin. Lay not its heavy responsibilities to its charge, but let this nation be saved. We pray for it, as we are in duty bound to do, and as our love constrains us to do. Oh, let the masses of the people yet come to seek after Christ. By some means, by all means, by every means, may the ears of men be reached, and then their hearts be touched.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“Let everyone submit to the governing authorities, since there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are instituted by God.” (Romans 13:1)

True religion is always the friend of order as well as of liberty. The gospel is no doctrine of anarchy, and the Christian is no fomenter of strife.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Phunoi of Laos.

The Phunoi are a group of 43,000 people in Laos (a country in southeast Asia, in between Thailand and Vietnam). There are zero Christians who speak their language and no churches they could visit. They have no hope of hearing the gospel unless someone brings it from the outside.

Pray that God would send missionaries to the Phunoi.

A Distinctly Christian Way to Think About Politics

As a Christian living in the United States, I feel increasingly uneasy about the way our political leaders talk about one another. In this election cycle, there’s been terrible slander from both sides. This seems out of step with a Savior who told us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us.

What does it look like to actually pursue politics in a distinctly Christian way? A great guide on this subject is Political Gospel: Public Witness in a Politically Crazy World by Patrick Schreiner. This book will help you understand — from a biblical perspective — why people get so worked up about politics and how to engage and stay grounded as a Christian.

This is a great, challenging, and hopeful read that I know will encourage you.
