DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Great God, save this nation! Oh God of heaven and earth, stop the floods of infidelity and of filthiness that roll over this land. God, allow us to see better days! Men seem entirely indifferent now. They will not come to hear the Word as once they did. God of our fathers let your Spirit work again among the masses. Turn the hearts of the people to the hearing of the Word and convert them when they hear it. May it be preached with the Holy Spirit sent down from heaven.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

ā€œSubmit to every human authority because of the Lord, whether to the emperor as the supreme authorityā€ (1 Peter 2:13)

In Peterā€™s day, the king was a poor creature, and something worse than that. Indeed, I might say of the bulk of the emperors of Rome, who were the chief ā€œkingsā€ of that day, that they were monsters of iniquity. Yet the office was to be respected even when the man who occupied it could not be.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, weā€™re praying for the Phunoi of Laos.

The Bible is not available in the Phunoi language. How can they live without the words of life?

Pray that qualified Bible translators would be funded and sent to the Phunoi of Laos.

Spurgeonā€™s hope for depressed people

Scripture calls us to praise God, even through our trials. This can sound like a difficult prospect for many of us, who are often stuck in a fog of depression that keeps us from seeing Godā€™s goodness. But Spurgeon himself can offer us a lot of counsel in that area.

Many people donā€™t realize that Spurgeon was plagued with crippling depression throughout his life and ministry. Throughout this struggle, Spurgeon cultivated a deep, Christ-centered hope that allowed him to continue to live and minister. We all have something to learn from Spurgeon.

You can learn more about Spurgeonā€™s struggle with depression ā€” and the hope that kept him through it ā€”in Spurgeonā€™s Sorrows: Realistic Hope for Those Who Suffer from Depression by Zack Eswine. This book isnā€™t just a biography of Spurgeon ā€” it describes lessons that we can learn from his real battle with depression.

Spurgeonā€™s Sorrows is a great resource for anyone who struggles with depression, and itā€™s a great Christ-centered gift that you can buy for someone else who is struggling.
