DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

May the Lord bless our country. Keep us in peace, we beg you and in times of congress and deliberation may there sit in the council chamber One higher than the kings of the earth, and greater than the ambassadors of the earth. Oh, that long-continued peace might happen to this poor earth, for its wounds are many. Behold, how all things languish for the lack of peace—may the Lord send it. Quicken trade and commerce, remove the complaining that is now heard in our streets. Kindly consider us in the matter of the weather, that the harvests may not be spoiled. Bless the people, oh Lord. Let the people praise you, and “then shall the earth yield her increase.” May the Lord grant all this, with the forgiveness of sin, the acceptance of our person, and assist us to always live for his glory, for Jesus’ sake.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“Dear friends, I urge you as strangers and exiles… Submit to every human authority because of the Lord, whether to the emperor as the supreme authority or to governors….” (1 Peter 2:11, 13–14)

Christians should be good citizens. Though in one respect they are not citizens of this world, yet as they find themselves in it they should seek the good of those among whom they dwell, and be patterns of order.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Phunoi of Laos.

God is at work to spread “the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations” (Romans 1:5). The Phunoi have not believed in Jesus because they have never heard of him.

Pray that the gospel would finally reach the Phunoi.
