DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Good God, blessed God, like David, we long to sit down before you in silence and wait awhile, for our words, when we do use them, are totally inadequate to the expression of what we feel, much more of what we ought to feel concerning your goodness and your loving-kindness; yet we will bless your name with the language that we do have. Lord, our God, let others worship whom they will and seek after whatever object of love they please, this God is our God forever and ever, he will be our guide even to death. Father, Son, and Spirit, the Triune God of Israel, we express most solemnly the reverence we feel for you; and render to you our humble adoration, as we acknowledge you to be the One and only God, by whom the heavens and the earth were made, by whom all things consist—the redeemer of your people, their Father and their Friend, forever and ever! All our hearts worship you, glorious Lord!

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’” (Luke 7:34)

Jesus’ whole soul was filled with love for people while they were yet sinners and enemies to himself. It was this that made him quit his Father’s court, and all the royalties of heaven, to come and be born in a stable, and laid in a manger, and to labor in a carpenter’s shop, and to become the poorest of the poor, and the most despised and rejected of people. All this was because he loved people, not only as people, but as guilty people. Their guilt excited his pity, for he knew the misery which lies concealed behind the apparent pleasure of sin; and to deliver guilty men from the consequences of their sin, he came to live where he could not have a place to lay his head, where at the last he did not even have a garment with which to cover his naked body. Our Lord Jesus is a truly sincere, intensely affectionate, earnest friend.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Maba of Indonesia.

The Maba are farmers. We are in the beginning of the crucial “wet season” for Indonesia when rains will enable them to grow their crops.

Pray that God would send rain for the Maba.
