DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

We have been saying to you this morning, like the leaves falling from the trees in autumn, ā€œAll of us have become like something unclean, and all our righteous acts are like a polluted garment; all of us wither like a leaf, and our iniquities carry us away like the windā€ (Isaiah 64:6). As the wind strips the leaves from the trees and leaves them bare, so we stand before you this morning. In our fallen nature, we do not have one green shoot or anything like fruit; we are unprofitable altogether and only fit to be ā€œcut down and thrown into the fireā€ (Matthew 3:10), for what fruit we have borne? The fruit of our nature has been more the fruit of thorns and thistles than of figs and grapes. Lord God, we are amazed that you have had mercy on us.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

ā€œWatch out, brothers and sisters, so that there won’t be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.ā€ (Hebrews 3:12)

Watch over one another as well as over yourselves. Take heed lest sin hardens you before you are aware of it. True religion is not a thing that can be acquired by carelessness or neglect. One may go to hell heedlessly, but one cannot go to heaven that way. Many stumble into the bottomless pit with their eyes shut, but no one ever yet entered into heaven by a leap in the dark.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Lao Lom in Thailand.

The Lao Lom live in northeastern Thailand, the poorest region in the country. The Lao Lom may have many humanitarian needs, but their most urgent need is to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Pray that the gospel would finally reach the Lao Lom.

Spurgeon’s word to the unworthy

This week, as we focus on our unfaithfulness, we also need to remember the greatness of God’s grace. No matter how sinful we are, God’s grace is enough. His mercy really is more.

Spurgeon wrote his book All of Grace as an extended treatise for non-Christians, explaining God’s plan of salvation by grace alone. Spurgeon intended this book for evangelistic reading (and it is a POWERFUL tool for that), but it’s also such an encouraging read for any Christian. This book will remind you of the freeness of God’s grace, the wideness of God’s mercy, and the availability of his welcome.

My friend, Luke Bray, updated the language of All is Grace a few years ago and put together the best edition I’ve seen yet. If your faith is feeling dry and you aren’t sure if God still has grace for you, All of Grace is the boost of life that your walk needs.

LAST WORD FROM SPURGEON

ā€œA great deal of unfaithfulness is caused by endeavoring to please people.ā€ — Charles Spurgeon
