DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Our Father, blessed be the grace and love which have taught us to use that dear familiar nameā€”ā€œOur Father in heaven,ā€ and therefore highest and most exalted, and worthy to be breathed with awe and reverence by all that draw near to you.

Lord, we have learned to call you ā€œOur Father in heaven;ā€ so there is reverence, for you are in heaven; but there is sweet familiarity, for you are our Father. We would draw very near to you now through Jesus Christ the Mediator, and we would boldly speak to you as a man speaks with his friend, for you have said by your Spirit, ā€œ let us approach the throne of grace with boldnessā€ (Hebrews 4:16).

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

ā€œTherefore, you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, your name be honored as holy.ā€ (Matthew 6:9)

We pray as children to a Father, and we pray as brothers, for we say, ā€œOur Father.ā€ ā€œOur Fatherā€ is a familiar name, but the words ā€œin heavenā€ suggest the reverence due unto him. Our Father and yet in heaven; in heaven and yet our Father. May his name be treated reverently, and may all that is about him—his Word and his gospel—be regarded with the deepest awe! It is for us so to walk before the Lord in all lowliness, that all shall see that we reverence the character of the thrice-holy One.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Awlad Hassan of Sudan.

The Awlad Hassan are a tribe of 163,000 people in Sudan, near the border of Chad. They have likely never heard the name of Jesus and there are no Christians among them. They will never hear the gospel unless someone brings it from the outside.

Pray that God would send missionaries to the Awlad Hassan.

ā€œThe Book that Shocked the Worldā€*

  • You need to know about Richard Wurmbrand. He was imprisoned multiple times in Soviet Romania for refusing to stop preaching the gospel.

  • How did he stay faithful in prison? Love for Christ and even his jailers is what kept him.

  • This month, The Voice of the Martyrs, the ministry that Richard founded in 1967, is giving away FREE paperback copies for his memoir, Tortured for Christ.

  • This remarkable book will expose you to the realities of persecution, the serious urgency of the gospel, and the unchanging love of Christ… even for his enemies.

LAST WORD FROM SPURGEON

ā€œDo not imagine that God the Father is a great tyrant and that God the Son had to die to make him merciful.ā€ — Charles Spurgeon
