Do not idolize your children

🛐 Daily Prayer: "How often do we set our hearts upon children, upon some beloved object, or upon wealth or upon honor."

DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

We must sorrowfully lament our hearts, how they wander. If you give us a blessing we begin to idolize it. How often do we set our hearts upon children, upon some beloved object, or upon wealth or upon honor. Somehow or other, this spiritual adultery too often comes upon us, and the chastity of our hearts towards our God is violated. Be pleased to forgive us in this.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“Sons are indeed a heritage from the LORD, offspring, a reward.” (Psalm 127:3)

Some people think children are a burden. But they are “a heritage of the Lord” and they are to be looked upon with gladness. One said, “I have twelve sons,” and his friend answered, “That is exactly Jacob’s number.” “Yes,” said the first speaker, “and I have Jacob’s God to enable me to sustain them.” There is a comfort in that thought; may God grant that none may be troubled by those whom God sends to us for a heritage!

Family devotions your kids will ask for more

Since launching God Centered Family, a series of family devotionals to teach kids the whole Bible, one of my favorite things has been to get emails from parents using the materials.

By God’s grace, parents consistently write to me to thank God for his work in their homes through God Centered Family. Instead of family devotions becoming a chore, parents find that their kids quickly become excited about diving into God’s Word together.

Here are some examples:

  • “I have been doing devotions with my son each night before bed for the last year and a half. Now, he reminds me if I try to slack off.”

  • “My family and I have developed a family worship routine and it’s going great so far.”

  • “This is so organized and easy for me to follow.”

  • “I recently started homeschooling the kids and God Centered Family is how we start our days. It’s great to be able to have that focused God time with the kids.”

  • “I love the simplicity and the fact that all ages can be involved. I have four kids, ages 12, 10, 4, and 1. So it is perfect for us.”

  • (This is my all-time favorite) — “We’re 12 days into our study of Mark & our family loves it! My seven-year-old used to complain when I told her we were going to read the Bible & would daydream the whole time. Now she looks forward to our Bible time & asks to be the reader. This study has been such a blessing to our family. Thank you for creating it!”
