DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
We have proved the power of Jesus’ blood for daily cleansing; we have proved the power of his divine Spirit for daily teaching, guidance, and sanctification; and now we want no other rock to build upon, than that which we have built upon; we desire no other hope, nor even to dream of any other, but that hope which you have set before us in the gospel, to which hope we have fled for refuge, and which hope we still have, as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast.
You know with what heartiness, and depths of truthfulness, we can say, “Lord, I believe, help my unbelief.” We again declare that all our hope is centered in the atoning sacrifice, and in the risen savior, who has gone into the glory as the testimony of our justification, and of our acceptance in him.
Amen.
VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
“... we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us.” (Hebrews 6:18)
We must personally lay hold to the hope. There is the hope, but we must grasp it and hold it fast. As with an anchor the cable must pass through the ring, and so be bound to it, so must faith lay hold upon the hope of eternal life. The original Greek signifies “to lay hold by main force and so to hold as not to lose our hold when the greatest force would pull it from us.” We must take firm hold of firm truth.
PRAY FOR THE NATIONS
This week, we’re praying for the Dabarre of Somalia.
The Dabarre live in small, close-knit villages ruled by a council of elders.
Pray that the gospel would reach every Dabarre village throughout Somalia.
RECOMMENDED RESOURCE
Are you really saved? (You CAN know for sure)
Today we prayed about having firm hope in our salvation because Jesus has died in our place. But how can we know that Jesus really did die for us? A great resource to help you answer that question is Am I Really a Christian? by Mike McKinley.
This book is a short Bible study on seven ways that the New Testament describes all Christians. If these things are true of you, then praise God, you can have assurance that you are born again. If these things are not true of you, then come to the cross in faith and find life in Jesus’ resurrection.
This book is a great resource for any Christian struggling with assurance. It is also a great book to read with a non-believer who claims to be a Christian — buy two and read it with a nominal Christian you know this year.
I hope you’ll take seriously the call to examine yourself, and I know that this book will be a helpful tool in the process.
FAITH’S CHECKBOOK
Spurgeon’s classic devotional, The Chequebook of the Bank of Faith, contains a promise of God for every day of the year. Pray with Spurgeon Plus subscribers receive the daily readings every weekday.

“The righteous thrive like a palm tree and grow like a cedar tree in Lebanon.” (Psalm 92:12)
These trees are not trained and pruned by man; palms and cedars are trees of the Lord, and it is by his care that they flourish. It is the same way with the saints of the Lord, they are under his own care.
These trees are evergreen and are beautiful objects at all seasons of the year. Believers are not sometimes holy and sometimes ungodly, they stand in the beauty of the Lord under all weathers. These trees are always noteworthy; no one can gaze upon a landscape in which there are either palms or cedars without his attention being fixed upon these royal growths. The followers of Jesus are seen by all observers, like a city set on a hill that cannot be hidden.
The child of God flourishes like a palm tree which pushes all its strength upward in one erect column without a single branch. It is a pillar with a glorious capital. It has no growth to the right or to the left, but sends all its force heavenward and bears its fruit as near the sky as possible. Lord, fulfill this in me.
The cedar braves all storms, and grows near the eternal snows, the Lord himself filling it with a sap which keeps its heart warm and its branches strong. Lord, so let it be with me, I pray.
Something to think about today if you’re feeling unholy: God will grow you.
