DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Perhaps it is written in the tablets of your eternal purpose that we shall soon end this mortal life and die. It is well if this is so, for then we shall see your face that much sooner and drink gallons of eternal bliss. But if you have appointed for us grey hairs and a long and weary time; only grant us grace that, by infirmity, our faith may never fail us; but when the windows are darkened, may we still look out to see the hope that is to be revealed; and when the grasshopper becomes a burden, still let our strength be as our days, even to the last day.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“... keeping our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2)

We must fix our eyes on “the pioneer of our faith.” If we do not begin by looking to him, however quickly we may hurry along, we shall run in vain and labor in vain. He has removed your heaviest weights and has destroyed your entangling sin by bearing the cross. He can renew your nature by his resurrection power and save you from the dominion of sin by his glorious reign. If you look to him alone, you start well; but not otherwise.

As Jesus is at the commencement of the course, starting the runners, so He is at the end of the course, the rewarder of those who endure to the end. Those who would win in the great race must keep their eyes upon Him all along the course, even until they reach the finish line.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Parachi of Afghanistan.

Afghanistan is ranked as the tenth worst country for the persecution of Christians. When Jesus saves his people among the Parachi (and he DOES have people among the Parachi!), they will be met with immediate persecution from family, government, and extremist groups.

Pray that when Parachi people convert to Christ, he would protect them.

God is going to do something amazing in your home

This week, we are praying for God to strengthen our faith. Often, one of the ways that many of us need to grow our faith is trusting God with our own kids. Whether our kids are grown or at home, professing faith or prodigals, we need to remember that God is in control of their lives.

Often, parents with kids in the home can get so pessimistic about our kids’ behavior. It’s easy to believe that God isn’t going to work in our home. Especially not through us!

But that’s exactly what God is going to do — he’s going to do amazing things in the life of your family and he’s going to do them through his Word.

One of the most powerful things that you can do with your kids is read and discuss the BIble with them every day. This is a simple habit (less than 10 minutes each day), but is POWERFUL. The God of the universe will speak to our children every time we open the Word together.

If you want a trustworthy guide to know what to read and what questions to ask to prompt meaningful discussion around God’s Word, check out God Centered Family. These devotionals will give you a realistic roadmap for pointing your kids to Jesus every day.

It’s time to finally start having real conversations about Christ with your kids — I hope God Centered Family can help.

FAITH’S CHECKBOOK

Spurgeon’s classic devotional, The Chequebook of the Bank of Faith, contains a promise of God for every day of the year. Pray with Spurgeon Plus subscribers receive the daily readings every weekday.

“He has provided food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever.” (Psalm 111:5)

Those who fear God do not need to fear poverty. Through all these long years the Lord has always found food for his own children, whether they have been in the wilderness, or by the brook Cherith (where Elijah drank water when fleeing from persecution under a wicked king, 1 Kings 17:3–4), or in captivity, or in the midst of famine. Up to now, the Lord has given us our daily bread day by day, and we do not doubt that he will continue to feed us until we lack no more.

As to the higher and greater blessings of the covenant of grace, he will never cease to supply them as our case demands. He remembers that he made the covenant and never acts as if he regretted it. He remembers it when we provoke him to destroy us. He remembers to love us, keep us, and comfort us even as he promised to do. He remembers every jot and tittle of his engagements, never allowing one of his words to fall to the ground.

We are sadly forgetful of our God, but he graciously remembers us. He cannot forget his Son who is the guarantor of the covenant, nor his Holy Spirit who actively carries out the covenant; nor his own honor, which is bound up with the covenant. Hence the foundation of God stands sure and no believer shall lose his divine inheritance.

Something to think about today if you’re feeling nervous about the future: God will never forget you.

LAST WORD FROM SPURGEON

“The happiest of all Christians are those who never dare to doubt God, but take his Word simply as it stands.” — Charles Spurgeon
