DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Now we come back to a theme that still seems to captivate our desires: we long for Christ to come. Oh, we long for his word to be made known to the uttermost ends of the earth! Lord, they die, they perish, they pass away by multitudes! Every time the sun rises and sets they pass away! Make no tarrying, we beg you. Give wings to the feet of your messengers and fire to their mouths, that they may proclaim the Word with swiftness and might as it did on the day of Pentecost. Oh, that your kingdom might come and your will be done on earth as it is in heaven, for yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever and ever.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

… while we wait for the blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.” (Titus 2:13)

This hope is not of debt, but of grace. Though our Lord will give us a reward, it will not be according to the law of works. We expect to be like Jesus when “we will see him just as he is” (1 John 3:2). When Jesus shines forth as the sun, “Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father” (Matthew 13:43). Our gain by godliness cannot be counted down into the palm of our hand; it lies in the glorious future, and yet it is so near to faith that at this moment I almost hear the chariot of the Coming One. The Lord is coming and in the coming of the Lord lies the great hope of the believer, his great stimulus to overcome evil, his main incentive to perfect holiness in the fear of the Lord.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Rawas of Indonesia.

The Rawas love art, especially dancing. They value beauty, but they do not know the truest beauty of God in Christ.

Pray that the Rawas would hear and believe in the good news of Jesus.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

Read Revelation — Where Satan Loses and Jesus Wins

Revelation, the last book of the Bible, shouldn’t produce fear about the end times (or supply us with a chart or timeline); instead, Revelation should produce amazement about Jesus. This book gives us a stunning picture of Jesus crushing Satan and saving his people forever.

A really helpful guide to understanding this amazing, faith-inspiring book is Between the Cross and the Throne by Matthew Y. Emerson. This simple Bible study will help you understand the story, symbols, and good news proclaimed in Revelation. You’ll walk away confident and hopeful.

We need to understand the book of Revelation, and I know this guide will help you.

FAITH’S CHECKBOOK

Spurgeon’s classic devotional, The Chequebook of the Bank of Faith, contains a promise of God for every day of the year. Pray with Spurgeon Plus subscribers receive the daily readings every weekday.

“Come, let’s return to the LORD. For he has torn us, and he will heal us; he has wounded us, and he will bind up our wounds.” (Hosea 6:1)

It is the Lord’s way to tear before he heals. This is the honest love of his heart and the sure surgery of his hand. He also bruises before he binds up or else it would be uncertain work. The law comes before the gospel; our awareness of neediness before he meets our needs. Are you now under the convincing, crushing hand of the Spirit? Have you received the spirit of bondage again so that you fear? This is a beneficial foretaste to real healing and binding up from Christ.

Do not despair, dear heart, but come to the Lord with all your jagged wounds, black bruises, and running sores. He alone can heal and he delights to do it. It is our Lord’s job to bind up the broken-hearted and he is gloriously fit for this work. Do not linger, but return at once to the Lord from whom we have gone astray. Let us show him our gaping wounds and beg him to know his own work and complete it. Will a surgeon make an incision and then leave his patient to bleed to death? Will the Lord pull down our old house and then refuse to build us a better one? He will never deliberately increase the misery of poor anxious souls.

Something to think about today if you’re feeling torn and wounded: The Lord will heal and bind up.

LAST WORD FROM SPURGEON

“Our Lord Jesus Christ will come a second time; this is the joy and hope of all believers.” — Charles Spurgeon
