DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

May we remember that we have been passed over by the spirit of condemnation; may we know in our hearts that “there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). May we feel the peace-giving power of the Divine absolution. May we come into your holy presence with our feet washed in the bronze basin, hearing our great High Priest say to us, “You are clean everywhere” (John 13:10). Made clean in this way, we may draw near to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Our heavenly Father, we come before you now washed in the blood, wearing the snow white robe of Christ’s righteousness.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“Now the main point of what is being said is this: We have this kind of high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a minister of the sanctuary and the true tabernacle that was set up by the Lord and not man.” (Hebrews 8:1–2)

The high priest went in but once a year, and out he went again to the solemn assembly. But now, in Christ Jesus, in whom dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily, we find a sanctuary to reside in, for we dwell in him; we are one with him. God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and as God was in Christ, so is it written, “You in me, and I in you” (John 17:23). Such is the union between Christ and his people. Every believer is in Christ, even as God is in Christ.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Dondo of Indonesia.

The Dondo are fishermen. They need fishers of men to come and tell them the truth of Jesus.

Pray that missionaries would go to the Dondo.

God Made the World (and You!) to be Beautiful

Every time I finished a chapter of Beauty is Your Destiny by Phillip Graham Ryken, I honestly thought that its teaching could (and should!) change my life. This is an incredible book that shows how God has made the entire world beautiful and calling us to follow after him — to live beautiful lives.

Ryken does a fantastic job redefining beauty from our cultural standards and instead helping us see what God says makes something beautiful. If you struggle with self-image, this book will be an incredible blessing. If you think that physical beauty isn’t something worth thinking about, this book will be an important corrective.

Beauty is Your Destiny is a fantastic book that reminded me of the beauty of God and invited me to take part in his splendor. It really is changing my life and I can’t wait to hear about how it changes yours.

FAITH’S CHECKBOOK

“But I protested, ‘Oh no, Lord GOD! Look, I don’t know how to speak since I am only a youth.’ Then the LORD said to me: Do not say, ‘I am only a youth,’ for you will go to everyone I send you to and speak whatever I tell you.” (Jeremiah 1:6–7)

Jeremiah was young and felt a natural shrinking when sent upon a great errand by the Lord; but he who sent him would not have him say, “I am only a youth.” What he was in himself must not be mentioned but lost in the consideration that he was chosen to speak for God. He had not to think up and invent a message nor choose an audience. He was to speak what God commanded and speak where God sent him. He would be enabled to do this in strength not his own.

Is it not so with some young preacher, or teacher who may read these lines? God knows how young you are, and how slender your knowledge and experience are; but if he chooses to send you, you cannot shrink from the heavenly call. God will magnify himself in your feebleness. If you were as old as Methuselah, how much would your years help you? If you were as wise as Solomon, you might be equally as disobedient as him. Keep you to your message and it will be your wisdom; follow your marching orders and they will be your discretion.

Something to think about today if you’re feeling not good enough to serve God: God will strengthen you.
