DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Now, Lord, if you will help us to pray we will begin by adoring you. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Here, all prayer should begin with reverent homage to the Most High. You are our creator, preserver, benefactor; all good comes from you, you deep abyss of love. Every drop of the rain of comfort falls from heaven. Every dewdrop of consolation, are you not the Father of it? We ascribe all honor and glory to you, for every good gift and every perfect gift, is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible.” (Hebrews 11:3)

The facts about creation must be the subject of faith. It is true that they can be substantiated by the argument from design and in other ways; still, for a wise purpose, God has not made even that matter of the creation of the universe perfectly clear to human reason so there is room for the exercise of faith. Men like to have everything laid down according to the rules of mathematical precision, but God desires them to exercise faith. Therefore, he has not acted according to their wishes.

Reason is all very well, but faith mounts upon the shoulders of reason and sees much farther than reason with her best telescope will ever be able to see. It is enough for us who have faith that God has told us how he made the world, and we believe it.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Yangliu Lalu of China.

The Yangliu Lalu have been commanded, along with all nations, to praise God: “Praise the LORD, all nations! Glorify him, all peoples!” (Psalm 117:1). God is worthy of praise from all peoples, but he cannot receive it from people who have never even heard his name. Missions exists because worship doesn’t.

Pray that missionaries would go to the Yangliu Lalu.

Seeing the Beauty of God in the Beauty of His World

This week, as we have focused on God as our creator, I hope you have looked at the world that God has made with an increased appreciation. God really has “made everything beautiful in its time” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). A great book for increasing your appreciation of the beauty of creation is Turning of Days by Hannah Anderson.

Hannah is a great thinker and brilliant writer. Her books are always challenging and encouraging, but this one is really unique. This book is based on the idea that the heavens and the world that God created declare his glory, but we have to learn to listen. Hannah takes us on a journey through the four seasons and shows how we can see glimpses of the Creator in the world he has made. Illustrations from her husband Nathan make the book even more beautiful.

I know this book will encourage you. With spring fast approaching, it’s a great time to grab a copy.
