DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

It may be that some creature comfort is nearer to us than our God. We had better have been without it, and have dwelt in God, and have found our joy in him. But now, Lord, in these perilous circumstances, give us grace that we may not turn away from you. If our position now is not what you would have allotted to us had we been wiser, yet, nevertheless, grant that we may be taught to behave ourselves rightly, even now, lest the mercies you have given should become a cause of stumbling, and the obtaining of our heart’s desire should become a temptation to us.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“The sorrows of those who take another god for themselves will multiply…” (Psalm 16:4)

We must be faithful to God—to the God revealed to us in the Book of God—the God of the Old Testament, of the New Testament, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. We must keep to him, not make another god after our own imagination.

It is practical idolatry even to conceive of God otherwise than he is revealed in Holy Scripture. This we must not do; but say, concerning the God of the Bible, “This God is our God forever and ever.”

Do your kids live for idols? Show them something better.

Today, kids are inundated with countless messages to believe and idols to live for. As parents, we long for our kids to live as fully-devoted, sold-out, passionate followers of Jesus. But it can be overwhelming to think about how to give our kids a compelling vision for a God centered life.

In a world of tantalizing idols, kids need to see the God of the Bible — unedited and unfiltered — in all of his greatness. Kids need the Bible, so let’s teach it to them. That’s why I’m writing a series of family devotionals, God Centered Family, to help parents teach their kids the entire Bible and call them to live for Jesus.

Subscribers to God Centered Family get unlimited access to our full library of family devotionals (including our newest devotional on Revelation).
