Let every idol be destroyed

🛐 Daily Prayer: "When will you come to be King of kings and Lord of lords? And now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, our Savior, be glory forever and ever, for Jesus Christ’s sake."

This week, our prayers and Scripture readings each day will focus on idolatry. Next week, we’ll highlight a different theme. Invite a friend to pray with you by sending them this link.

DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Let the idols be broken into pieces; let all false foundations be demolished to the ground, and may he come whose right it is to reign. Oh Jesus, the world has waited long and we have heard people cry out to overturn your rule; but when will you stop the overturn to establish the righteous things, and to cast down all evil? When will you come to be King of kings and Lord of lords? And now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, our Savior, be glory forever and ever, for Jesus Christ’s sake.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“Do not make an idol for yourself, whether in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth.” (Exodus 20:4)

The first commandment forbids the worship of another god. The second strictly forbids us to worship anything which our eyes can see, under the pretense that we are thereby worshiping God. This is another offense and much more common than the first. It is often pleaded, “Oh, we do not worship these things! We worship God whom these represent.” But here it is strictly forbidden to represent God under any form or substance whatever and to make that an object of worship.

Drive idolatry out by loving God more

This week, our prayers will be focusing on idolatry — asking God to expose and remove the things we love more than him. The best way to fight idolatry is to fill your heart with love for God… enjoyment of God. If you want to learn more about what it actually looks like to enjoy God in your every day life, read Desiring God by John Piper. This book is an incredible explanation of how God invites us to know him for our joy. This book will leave you amazed at God’s glory, and thoroughly, unshakeable happy in God.

I hope you’ll grab a copy and enjoy it this summer — I know you’ll be blessed by it.
