DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Oh Lord, give to all that have believed in you a sense of perfect deliverance from sin. Let us not say, “I know that I shall be justified on the Day of Judgment.” Let us not postpone that blessing, but may we enjoy it now; for truly if you are the resurrection so that we may believe in you now, surely you are our justification to be accepted and rejoiced in now. And we do accept you—Jesus. Your blood is our cleansing; your righteousness is our clothing. We stand accepted in the Beloved, all of us who have believed in your holy name. Let your people enjoy now that sweet peace which comes from being justified by faith. If any here who have not believed, may they put their trust in Christ! May faith be wrought in them. May they cheerfully and at once receive the great atonement and be saved by it.

Amen.

WHAT IS JUSTIFICATION?

I chose this as the theme for this week after preaching on Romans 4:25 on Easter, “He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.” Justification is the legal declaration in which God declares us not guilty, not righteous instead.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“And the gift is not like the one man’s sin, because from one sin came the judgment, resulting in condemnation, but from many trespasses came the gift, resulting in justification.” (Romans 5:16)

What is justification? Well, first, justification is the reverse of condemnation. Do you know what condemnation is? I suppose that you never were condemned in a court of law; but were you ever condemned in the court of conscience? Did all your thoughts sit, like a jury, to test your whole life, and did they, with one consent, by the mouth of the judge, say, “Guilty.” You do not know how to spell “justification” until every letter of the word “condemnation” has burnt itself into your soul. Many a man has been ready to lay violent hands upon himself when he has been under sentence of condemnation; but justification is quite as real.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Jat of Pakistan.

The Jat are an ethnic group of 13.9 million Muslims. They are made in God’s image, but they have never heard of God’s Son.

Pray that God would send missionaries to the Jat of Pakistan.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

You need a dictionary (Seriously, you need a dictionary)

Definitions are important. When reading a book or listening to teaching, we can’t learn or apply anything if we don’t know the words an author or speaker is using. Even more importantly, we need to know what we’re reading about when we find words like justification in the Bible.

The Baker Compact Dictionary of Theological Terms by Gregg Allison is an invaluable resource for theological studies, offering clear definitions for the most important words for understanding the Bible and theology. This is an incredible resource for looking up new words that you don’t know and for getting a quick refresher on various theological positions.
