DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
May there be many hearts conscious of guilt, which will be enabled to look to Jesus, the great sin offering, and looking to him, may be able to see how God is reconciled, how sin is blotted out, how the wandering prodigal child is led to the Father’s heart. Precious sin bearer, let many know that you have borne their sin. Let them know it today. Is it not written, “By his knowledge, my righteous servant will justify many, and he will carry their iniquities” (Isaiah 53:11)? May that priceless promise be fulfilled in thousands of cases.
Amen.
VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
“… they will look at me whom they pierced. They will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child and weep bitterly for him as one weeps for a firstborn.” (Zechariah 12:10)
It is currently believed that we are, first of all, to mourn for our sins and then to look by faith to our Lord Jesus Christ. This is not according to the Scriptures, for according to the text before us, men first look on him whom they have pierced; and then, but not until then, they mourn for their sin. This is the common human folly—they look for the effect in order to produce the cause; they forget the old proverb and put the cart before the horse. But our text plainly indicates what is the cause and puts it first, assuring us that the effect will follow. Repentance is in no sense a preparation to faith in Christ. It is, on the other hand, a legitimate consequence of faith.
PRAY FOR THE NATIONS
This week, we’re praying for the Tumari Kanuri of Niger.
God has commanded his people to be his “witnesses… to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). As far as we know, this command has never been obeyed among the Tumari Kanuri. They have never heard of Jesus.
Pray that God would raise up missionaries to bring the gospel to the Tumari Kanuri.
