DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Lord, forgive us that death in life, in which so many of our years were spent, when we found something in the world apart from you and were content with the things of the hour, the vile shadows, transient gusts of things which truly are not, for you alone are all in all.

We have repented through your grace, most bitterly of that time of death in which we tried to live; and now, you have given us to see our pardon in the wounds of Jesus, and our soul puts her trust in him. God incarnate is the ground of our hope that we are accepted and forgiven, notwithstanding that previous life of ours.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

ā€œThis will be the sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped tightly in cloth and lying in a manger.ā€ (Luke 2:12)

Not in marble halls, wrapped in purple and fine linen, and welcomed by the great and mighty of earth; nay, this greatest of all princes is born amid the poverty of our ordinary manhood. He is one chosen out of the people, the people’s savior, and a manger receives the people’s King.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Kakabe of Guinea.

The Kakabe are Muslims but they also worship tribal spirits. Some of their worship involves inflicting pain on themselves to prove their bravery to the spirits.

Pray that the Kakabe would hear the good news of Jesus that sets them free from all fear.

Last Minute Christmas Gift Idea for Toddlers: Very Best Bible Stories

As a dad of three, I love Tim Thornborough’s series of Bible story picture books, Very Best Bible Stories. These books are so engaging. The illustrations are packed with details that leave everyone (even the parents) admiring the details and laughing at the visual gags. The story-telling is repetitive in an age-appropriate way (without leaving parents bored out of our minds). These are really fun, engaging books that help your kids know the Bible.

The latest book in this series, Joseph and the Very Strange Dreams is such a delight. I was thankful to receive a review copy and, trust me, it doesn’t disappoint. Your kids will love to read (and SHOUT!) when they open this book on Christmas. You can also prepare them for Christmas with A Very Noisy Christmas, which is one of my favorite picture books about the birth of Jesus.
