DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

We thank you, blessed Savior, that you are such a wonderful lover of the sons of men; so willing to go out of your way after a poor sinner as to be under a compulsion to go the way through Samaria where a guilty one shall come and speak with you so that you could speak with her (John 4). We admire your blessed humility in making your first convert to be one who had so foully fallen and in winning that one heart, thereby winning so many more. Far be it from us ever to come to you in the filthy rags of our own righteousness. They are worse than nothing. We must be willing to come to the Savior as people who want saving, to come to his blood to be washed, to come weak and feeble, to find strength in him, and nowhere else. You will not meet us on any other terms but these. You would not meet the Pharisees. You went away from them when they had heard about you, for you did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

ā€œFor we eagerly await through the Spirit, by faith, the hope of righteousness.ā€ (Galatians 5:5)

Observe that our hope is the hope ā€œof righteousnessā€ā€”that is to say, a hope rising from the fact that we are righteous and therefore God will treat us as such. We disown all reliance upon our own righteousness, which we know are only filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6). Still, we have a glorious hope based upon the fact that we are actually righteous before God at this moment. By faith we are as righteous as if we had never sinned. This day, having believed in Jesus Christ, ā€œthere is therefore now no condemnation to usā€ (Romans 8:1). We have a righteousness that we dare to present before God, for it is perfect. In it there is no omission and no excess. We are righteous before God and without fault before his throne.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Aheria in India.

There are likely no Aheria Christians, but there ARE faithful churches in their area. However, the state where most of them live, Uttar Pradesh, have strict anti-conversion laws that forbid evangelism or conversion without government permission.

Pray that Christians in Uttar Pradesh would boldly and wisely share the gospel.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

Why are kids always told to ā€œbelieve in themselves?ā€

Every day, dozens of voices will tell our kids to believe in themselves. The Bible offers a unique, counter-cultural message: trust in Christ alone. If you want this message to sink into your kids’ brains and hearts, then read the Bible to them every day.

God’s Word has power to call and convince all people (including kids!) to turn to Christ. That’s why I’ve created God Centered Family, a series of family devotionals that give parents everything they need to walk through the entire Bible with their kids.

Every day, these devotionals will guide you to call your kids to look to Christ. I can’t wait to partner with you and see what God does.

FAITH’S CHECKBOOK

Spurgeon’s classic devotional, The Chequebook of the Bank of Faith, contains a promise of God for every day of the year. Pray with Spurgeon Plus subscribers receive the daily readings every weekday.

ā€œJesus responded to him, ā€˜Do you believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.ā€™ā€ (John 1:50)

These words were spoken to a childlike believer who was ready to accept Jesus as the Son of God, the King of Israel, upon one convincing piece of argument. Those who are willing to see shall see; we only become so sadly blind because we shut our eyes.

We have seen much already. The Lord has shown us great and unsearchable things for which we praise his name; but there are greater truths in his Word, greater depths of experience, greater heights of fellowship, greater works of usefulness, greater discoveries of power, and love, and wisdom. We will see these things if we are willing to believe our Lord. The ability to invent false doctrine is ruinous but the power to see the truth is a blessing. Heaven shall be opened to us, the way there shall be made clear to us in the Son of Man and the angelic ascent which goes on between the upper and the lower kingdoms shall be made more manifest to us (John 1:51). Let us keep our eyes open toward spiritual things and expect to see more and more. Let us believe that our lives will not sink down into nothing. Instead, let us believe that we will always be seeing greater and still greater things until we behold the great God himself and never again lose the sight of him.

Something to think about today if you’re feeling disappointed: God has promised us that we will see him; this will be our greatest joy.

LAST WORD FROM SPURGEON

ā€œThe greatest enemy to human souls is the self-righteous spirit which makes men look to themselves for salvation.ā€ — Charles Spurgeon
