DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Editor’s Note: Spurgeon was praying about the Anglo-Egyptian War of 1882; we can pray this prayer for the conflicts in our own day.

God, look upon our country and bless it. In infinite mercy, end this horrible war. Our soul weeps to think that this war should have been perpetrated by those whom we thought better of. Oh God almighty, may it come to a speedy close and may a permanent peace be established. Let the whole earth sit still and be at peace. Sword of the Lord, will you never rest? Will you never be quiet? We beg you, oh God of infinite mercy, turn men’s minds from all the sins that breed the cruelties and wickednesses of war, and may a peace of soul and heart with God come, and then a peace with our fellow men. Oh for the kingdom and the coming! Oh that Christ himself would soon appear! But if in mercy he delays until men repent, then come, divine Spirit, and lead them to repentance, and let the elect of God be gathered together out from among the sons of men, and the divine purpose be accomplished, and let Jesus see the reward for his suffering. Our heart asks infinitely better than our lips can do. Oh hear us for Jesus’ sake.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

ā€œFor a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.ā€ (Isaiah 9:6)

Who is this ā€œLord of peaceā€ but the Lord Jesus? He came to establish an empire of peace that shall be universal, and under whose influence they shall hang the useless helmet high and study war no more. ā€œThe Prince of peace!ā€ How blessed is the title!

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Kluet of Indonesia.

The Kluets’ language is only spoken in Indonesia. The Bible has not been translated into this language.

Pray that God’s Word would be brought to the Kluet.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

God cares about all nations because he cares about God.

This week, as we prayed for world peace, we need to remember that the only true path to world peace is the spread of the gospel to all nations. Global missions is the center of God’s passion — so to be apathetic about it is to be distinctly ungodly.

The book Let the Nations Be Glad by John Piper will help you understand why God cares about all the nations of the earth. Piper creates an incredible case to show that God cares about all nations of the earth because his glory is at stake. If every nation doesn’t worship, then God will not be glorified as he should be. So we have to care.

LAST WORD FROM SPURGEON

ā€œSerenity under the rush and roar of unexpected evil is a precious gift of divine love.ā€ — Charles Spurgeon
