DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
Lord keep us humble, dependent, yet serenely joyful. May we be calm and quiet, yet still earnest and active. We long to conquer ourselves.
Help us be unaffected when others praise us, so that we will not be too greatly affected when they criticize us. Let us believe that to have the approval of God and of our own conscience is quite enough; and may we be content, gracious God, to bear condemnation from unreasonable people. Those that we love, if they do not love us, may we still love them none the less, and if by mistake they misjudge us, let us have no hard feelings towards them.
Keep us like little children who do not know, but expect to know later and are content to believe things which they do not understand.
Amen.
VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
āBlessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.ā (Matthew 5:3)
Spiritual poverty is both commanded and commended. It is the basis of Christian experience. No one begins aright who has not felt poverty of spirit. Yet even to this first sign of grace is the kingdom given in present possession: ātheirs is the kingdom of heaven.ā The question in heavenās kingdom is not, āAre you a peer?ā but, āAre you poor in spirit?ā Those who are of no account in their own eyes are of the blood royal of the universe. These alone have the principles and the qualifications for a heavenly kingdom.
PRAY FOR THE NATIONS
This week, weāre praying for the Bajgi of India.
The Bajgiās name comes from a word meaning playing instruments. They have been known for centuries as drummers and frequently play instruments in Hindu temples. Missionaries may be able to use drum music to share the gospel with them, that they might turn from idols to serve the living God.
Pray that the Bajgi would be open to the good news of Jesus.
