DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

“Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” May our course be very clean, our path be very straight; may we keep our garments unspotted from the world; and in thought and desire and imagination, in will and in purpose, may we be holy as God is holy.

O God, we pray again fulfill that covenant promise, “I will take away the heart of stone out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.” May we be very tender towards you; may we feel your faintest admonition; may even the gentlest breath of your Spirit suffice to move us; may we not be “as the horse or as the mule which have no understanding; whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto us,” but may we be as children obedient to a father; may we yield our members cheerfully to the instruments of righteousness; may we have a natural desire wrought in the new nature towards everything that is pure and honest, unselfish and Christly.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

David made a vow to “the Mighty One of Jacob: ‘I will not enter my house or get into my bed, I will not allow my eyes to sleep or my eyelids to slumber until I find a place for the LORD, a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.’” (Psalm 132:2–5)

God does not measure his people’s actions by their wisdom or want of wisdom, but by the sincere desire for his glory which has led up to them. David’s resolution, though he was not allowed to fulfill it, brought a blessing upon him. The Lord promised to build the house of David because David had desired to build the house of the Lord. Moreover, the King was allowed to prepare the treasure for the building of the glorious temple which was built by his son and successor. The Lord shows the acceptance of what we desire to do by permitting us to do something else which his infinite mind judges to be fitter for us, and more honorable to himself.
