God’s love in Christ

Pray with Spurgeon

Daily Newsletter from SpurgeonBooks

This week, our prayers and Scripture readings each day will focus on the love of God. Next week, we’ll highlight a different theme. Invite a friend to pray with you by sending them this link.

DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Gracious God, we praise you with our whole hearts for the wondrous revelation of your love in Christ Jesus our Lord. Your grace has almost out-graced itself; your love has reached its height: love to rebels; so much love that even your Son could not be spared. Oh God, we are afflicted in our hearts to think we do not love you more after such love as this. Oh, were there not a stone in our hearts, we should melt in love to you; we should account that there was no thought fit to occupy the mind but this one stupendous thought of God’s love to us, the great love with which you have loved us.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

The love of God is a wonderful thing, especially when we see it set on a lost, ruined, guilty world. What was there in the world that God should love it? There was nothing lovable in it. No fragrant flower grew in that arid desert. Enmity to him, hatred to his truth, disregard of his law, rebellion against his commandments—those were the thorns and briars that covered the wasteland, but no desirable thing blossomed there.

Where did this love come from? Not from anything outside of God himself. God’s love springs from himself. He loves because it is his nature to do so.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Ashtiani of Iran.

This group of 28,000 people has zero Christians. They will never hear about Christ unless someone from outside of their culture goes to them.

Pray that missionaries would go to the Ashtiani.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

God’s love is an ocean. Dive in with Spurgeon.

A major theme in Spurgeon’s preaching (and all of Scripture!) is the incomparable love of God. God’s love provides for us, serves us, helps us, forgives us. God’s love, seen supremely at the cross of Christ, is our only hope in life and death. It’s important that we continually remember and reflect on the greatness of God’s love. That’s why it’s the theme of “Pray with Spurgeon” this week.

To help you continue to enjoy God’s love, I put together a book, Spurgeon on God’s Love, which compiles twelve sermons by Spurgeon, all reflecting on the glorious reality of God’s unchanging love.

These sermons have really encouraged me over the last few months and I know that they will encourage you. Plus, buying a copy is a great way to support this ministry, so I can continue to send this newsletter every day. (The software I use to send this email recently raised their prices — I hope you’ll consider supporting this ministry if you’re able to.)

I hope you’ll grab a copy for yourself (and another one for a friend!) and reflect on God’s love in your fall reading.
