This week, our prayers and Scripture readings each day will focus on the grace of God. Next week, we’ll highlight a different theme. Invite a friend to pray with you by sending them this link.
DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
Your grace must help us even to know our need for grace. We are not willing to confess our own sinfulness until you show it to us. Though it stares us in the face, our pride denies it, and our own inability is unperceived by us. We steal your power and call it our own until you compel us to say that we have no strength in ourselves. Now, Lord, would we acknowledge that all good must come from you. We have sinned ourselves into hopeless misery, unless your free undeserved grace rescues us from it.
Amen.
VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
“How joyful is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered!” (Psalm 32:1)
Can I say that this amazing grace is mine? Has he enrolled my worthless name in the covenant of his grace? Do I see the blood mark on my pardon? Do I know that he purchased it at such a price? Then can I refuse to say, “How joyful is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered!”
RECOMMENDED RESOURCE
Know how you were forgiven — be freed from pride and despair.
This week our prayers will focus on God’s grace. This is an important topic for all Christians, but we shouldn’t be satisfied with a surface-level understanding of it. The deeper our understanding of God’s grace is, the more blessings we will gain from this doctrine.
A great book to help you dive deeper into this topic of God’s grace and our forgiveness is Justification by Grace through Faith: Finding Freedom from Legalism, Lawlessness, Pride, and Despair by Brian Vickers. This book walks through the Bible’s teaching on justification and forgiveness in a way that is thoroughly biblical and intensely practical.
I hope you’ll grab a copy — I know it will bless and encourage you to give thanks to the Lord.
