DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Lord, we thank you for the liberty which comes to our emancipated spirit through the adoption which you have given us to enjoy. When we were enslaved to sin, the chains were heavy for we could not keep your law; there was an inward spirit of rebellion; when the commandment came, it irritated our corrupt nature and sin revived, and we died. Even when we had some strivings after better things, still the power that was in us lusted into evil. We wanted to fly from the Father’s house; we were wild men, men of the wilderness, and we did not love living in the Father’s house.

God, we thank you that we have not been cast out. Indeed, if you had cast out the child of the slave, you would have cast us out, but now through sovereign grace all is changed with us. Blessed be your name.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“There is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God.” (Romans 3:11)

That is, none do so by nature; those who seek after God are led to do so by a work of grace upon their hearts. Otherwise, men are blind, they do not see the right path; they are rebellious and do not seek after God.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Rao in China.

The Rao have a strong culture and sense of identity. The gospel will likely feel like a “foreign” message. They need to know that Christ is king of all cultures.

Pray that missionaries would wisely contextualize the gospel for the Rao.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

Where does sin come from? Why do we sin sexually?*

This week, as we focus on the depravity of our own hearts, you may be understanding your sin more clearly. Recently, I read a book for women, You Are Not Alone by Molly Bertles, that did an incredible job at breaking down WHERE sexual sin comes from and what to do about it.

Molly focuses on the sin of masturbation and breaks it down into three separate events (Tempting fuel, triggering event, and the act of masturbation itself) and describes what repentance looks like in each of those stages. By addressing sin at every stage, Molly gives women a solid framework for pursuing real and lasting change.

This is the kind of practical and biblical wisdom that Molly has poured into her book. It’s a powerful resource for any woman who wants to grow in purity.

This is the final week to buy You Are Not Alone at a discount, so make sure to grab your copy today.

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” (Revelation 21:4)

We will come to this if we are believers. Sorrow will cease and tears will be wiped away. This is the world of weeping, but it passes away. There will be a new heaven and a new earth and there will be nothing to weep over concerning the fall and the miseries that came from it.

The Bible compares this day to a bride and her marriage (Revelation 21:2). The Lamb’s wedding is a time for boundless pleasure and tears would be out of place. On that day, we will say, “Look, God’s dwelling is with humanity” (Revelation 21:3), and surely at his “at your right hand are eternal pleasures” (Psalm 16:11) and tears can no longer flow.

What will our state be when “grief, crying, and pain will be no more” (Revelation 21:4)? This will be more glorious than we could currently imagine.

Eyes that are red with weeping, cease your scalding flow, for in a little while you shall know no more tears! No one can wipe tears away like the God of love and he is coming to do it. “Weeping may stay overnight, but there is joy in the morning” (Psalm 30:5) Come, Lord, and do not delay; for now your people are weeping.

Something to think about today if you’re feeling sorrowful: Your sorrow is real, but it won’t be forever.
