DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Lord, look upon your people. We might pray about our troubles. We will not; we will only pray against our sins. We might come to you about our weariness, about our sickness, about our disappointment, about our poverty; but we will leave all that, we will only come about sin. Lord make us holy, and then do what you will with us.

You have often brought us very low, even to our knees, and we cried for mercy, but we rose to sin again. Blessed was that day when you struck the blow of grace. Then you withered up our beauty and all our perfection was rolled in the dust. We saw ourselves to be slain by the law, to be lost, ruined, and undone, and then we rolled to and fro in the tempests of our thoughts and staggered like drunken men, and were at our wits’ end—then we cried unto you in our trouble. Blessed be your name forever, you delivered us.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“For just as the sufferings of Christ overflow to us, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.” (2 Corinthians 1:5)

The apostles were the most tried, but they were also the most comforted. They had to stand the brunt of the battle, but the Lord was their strength in a very special sense. With little trial, we may expect little comfort. It is better to leave the whole matter entirely with God, or else we might almost desire to be dug up by the spade of affliction so that we might receive more of the living waters of consolation.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Mubi of Chad.

The Mubi are entirely Muslim. They believe that they must keep the five pillars of Islam to find the mercy of God. They do not know the grace of the one true God in Christ.

Pray that God would set the Mubi free from these lies.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

A free book (no strings attached)*

Rejection in this world directly leads to rewards in the next world — a trade we should all be willing to make. Christ has more to offer us than all of this world put together. I’ve been reminded of these truths while reading the book Extreme Devotion from The Voice of the Martyrs.

This book is a breathtaking collection of 365 inspiring true stories of Christians who were faithful to Christ… even when it was hard.

This massive book is being given away for FREE this month, so please make sure to order your copy today (USA only).

WHY is this book free? The Voice of the Martyrs knows that these stories are powerful and will inspire the church to follow Jesus and live a radical life of discipleship. This nonprofit ministry wants to bless you by sending you this book in the mail. (This is not an ebook that you’ll forget you downloaded — but an awesome hard copy book that will find a treasured spot on your shelf and nightstand.)

Jesus felt sickness and pain, poverty and hunger, weakness and depression.” — Charles Spurgeon
