DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Our Father, when you have put away everything that divides us from you, lead us into your truth. Teach us more of your Word; teach it to us by experience; may we have it burned into our hearts; may we know the truth not only in the letter of it but in the life and spirit of it.

Teach us to be holy. We long for this! We would have every passion under subjection; we would have every power and faculty bitted and held in with a bridle. We desire to have every evil tendency killed and have every holy tendency imparted.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“Pursue peace with everyone, and holiness—without it no one will see the Lord.” (Hebrews 12:14)

Now, if our text said that, without perfection of holiness, no man could have any communion with Christ, it would shut every one of us out. No one who knows his own heart ever pretends to be perfectly conformed to God’s will. But it does not say, “perfection of holiness,” but “holiness.”

This holiness is a thing of growth. It may be in the soul as the grain of mustard seed and yet not developed. It may be in the heart as a wish and a desire, rather than anything that has been fully realized—a groaning, a panting, a longing, a striving. As the Spirit of God waters it, it will grow until the mustard seed shall become a tree.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Yoruk of Turkey.

The Yoruk are primarily a nomadic tribe — they travel around shepherding animals. This will make reaching them with the gospel difficult.

Pray that God would send missionaries to the Yoruk and give them endurance..

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

A real path for pursuing lasting change in Jesus.

This week, we are praying about sanctification and ask God to help us grow in godliness. Sanctification is something that God and his people partner together in. We fully depend on him to grow us, but we also pursue growth.

I love the way this process is described in An Infinite Journey: Growing Toward Christlikeness by Andrew Davis. This book walks through real, sustainable, lasting change in Jesus — starting with knowledge of the truth, deepening our faith in Christ, forming godly character, and THEN pursuing new actions. Behavior modification isn’t enough — so let’s pursue change in the truth. I know this book will help you.

LAST WORD FROM SPURGEON

“Justification without sanctification would not be salvation at all.” — Charles Spurgeon
