DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

Lord, be pleased to help us every day to put down sin. Oh Lord, whenever pride arises, may we be more humbled than ever before in your sight. Whenever self comes up, may we be determined it shall not live, but flee to the precious blood, that we may slay it. Lord, save us from self; save us from the love of the world; save us from the pride of the eye, and the pride of life; save us, we beg you, from everything that is natural to fallen man, and let the new nature which you have planted manifest itself day by day, until we shall be made like Christ, whom “though we have not seen him, we love him” (1 Peter 1:8), but to whom we shall be conformed, for “we will see him as he is” (1 John 3:2).

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall.” (Prov 16:18)

Be humble, or you’ll stumble.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Lafofa of Sudan.

This is a group of about 35,000 people who, as far as we know, have never heard the gospel. The Bible has not been translated into their language, they have no churches they could attend, and there are no Christians among them.

Pray that God would send missionaries to the Lafofa.

Discover the joy and freedom of humility

Pride is a particularly dangerous (and common!) sin among Christians today. We are quick to believe our own praise and believe the worst about others. This is the opposite of the Lord Jesus, who was supremely humble.

A fantastic read for helping you cultivate humility is Humility: The Joy of Self-Forgetfulness by Gavin Ortlund. This short book describes humility from a biblical viewpoint (not just a cultural one). Ortlund shows how pride robs us of joy and true peace is found in humility. The book is also full of practical advice to kill pride and cultivate humility.

If you have pride in your life (and you probably do!), then you need to grab a copy of this book to find a fuller life and truer joy in Jesus. I hope you'll grab a copy today.
