DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

We lament that in the body of this death there is much that we abhor. We are tempted to laziness at times and though busy in the world we become spiritually idle. We are tempted to envy others because they excel us and we mourn to confess the lowness of our spirit in this matter. We have to lament our pride. We have nothing to be proud of; the lowest place is ours; but Lord, we often conceive ourselves to be something when we are nothing. We pray that you would forgive all these vices of our nature; but at the same time kill them, for we hate ourselves to think we should fall into such evils. Especially have mercy upon us for our unbelief. You have given us proof of your existence, and of your love for us, and of your care for us; you especially given us your only begotten Son, best pledge of love.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

ā€œNot that I have already reached the goal or am already perfect, but I make every effort to take hold of it because I also have been taken hold of by Christ Jesus. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is aheadā€¦ā€ (Philippians 3:12ā€“13)

Believe that you are sinful, admit that sin far too often prevails over you, and then go humbly to God, and confess that it is so, and seek from him grace to keep you, day by day, from the power of reigning sin; and you will, in that way, make a real advance in sanctification and true holiness.

That forgetting of the things which are behind, and reaching forward to those that are ahead, that pressing forward toward the mark for the prize of your high calling in Christ Jesus, to which the apostle urges youā€”that seeking to fight from day to day with the temptations that surround you, not reckoning that you have won the victory yet, but believing that you will win it through the blood of the Lambā€”this is what we long to see in you.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, weā€™re praying for the Idaksahak in Mali.

The Idaksahak are a group of 174,000 Muslims. There are no Christians among them because they have never heard the message of Jesus. They will never hear the gospel unless someone brings it to them from the outside.

Pray that God would send missionaries to the Idaksahak.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

FINAL DAY: Get a FREE book on the underground church*

This month, my friends at The Voice of the Martyrs are giving away FREE COPIES of Hearts of Fire, which tells the stories of eight women who faced extreme persecution for their faith in Jesus. Their stories are truly inspiring ā€” these women saw Christ work in unlikely places (one story even takes place within the Soviet Union!) through their costly faith.

These women refused to stop spreading the truth about Christ, even when religious extremists and hostile governments tried to stop them. Several of them were taken captive or imprisoned and then proceeded to share Christ with their captors and fellow prisoners.

I walked away from this book convinced of several thingsā€¦

  • Christ is powerful.

  • Christians are being persecuted around the world in horrific ways

  • Christ WILL sustain his people, build his church, and spread his gospel

You will not regret taking the time to hear the stories of these bold women and their costly faith.

LAST WORD FROM SPURGEON

ā€œYou consider sin a mere trifle, scarcely worth thinking about; but God regards it as an evil and an accursed thing.ā€ ā€” Charles Spurgeon
