DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)
We would rather sit with Mary and do nothing but learn, than become cumbered with much serving like good Martha. Lord, we sometimes feel we could honestly say, some of us, we do not know what else we could do for you, or else we would do it; but we want to serve you better. We pray that we may do it with a simpler motive, with greater singleness of heart, with deeper devotion to Christ. We want not only to live and work, but to have Christ living in us, and for our life to be but a stream that flows from the mighty river of the life of Christ. Lord, make us like Christ, who is the “firstborn among many brothers and sisters” (Romans 8:29). He is the very model of the family. Make us like him, our Father, for the glory of your name.
Amen.
VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)
“… whoever wants to become great among you will be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you will be a slave to all.” (Mark 10:43–44)
The truest honour in the church of God is found in service. He who serves most is the greatest. He who will occupy the lowest office, he who will bear patiently to be the most put upon, he who is most ready to be despised and to be the servant of all, shall be the chiefest of all. The way to rise in the kingdom of heaven is to descend, for even so was it with our Lord himself. May God give to all of us the humble and lowly spirit that will make us willing to be the least of all!
PRAY FOR THE NATIONS
This week, we’re praying for the Lasi of Pakistan.
The Lasi are currently fasting for Ramadan. Muslims around the world are abstaining from food to purify themselves — they do not know that Jesus gave himself to purify us freely.
Pray that God would reveal himself to the Lasi in this season of spiritual seeking.
RECOMMENDED RESOURCE
A simple read to help you love your church more
As we’ve been seeing this week in our prayers, God is calling us to serve the people around us — especially in our own churches. We all need to grow to love our local church family more. And a great resource for helping you along the way is Love Your Church by Tony Merida. This book outlines eight great things about being a church member. It is faithful to Scripture and filled with practical application.
The book is simple and short. I promise you, if you will read this book and apply its lessons to your own local church, you will grow in love for your church family and grow in godliness as a result.
