God, make us humble like you

DAILY PRAYER (BY SPURGEON)

We lament that in the body of this death there is much that we abhor. We are tempted to laziness at times and though busy in the world we become spiritually idle. Also, we are tempted to envy others, because they excel us, and we mourn to confess the meanness of our spirit in this matter. We also must lament our pride. We have nothing to be proud of; the lowest place is ours; but Lord, we often conceive ourselves to be something when we are nothing. We pray that you would forgive all these vices of our nature but at the same time kill them, for we hate to think that we should fall into such evils.

May you who dwells in the highest heavens, yet dwells in lowly hearts, make us lowly; set us free from all wrath, and pride, and foul desire, and groveling worldliness. Make us conscious of sin, trembling at you but rejoicing in your mercy, hoping in your salvation; triumphing in your love.

Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY (COMMENTARY BY SPURGEON)

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. Everyone should look not to his own interests, but rather to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:3–4)

Do not obey the world’s maxim, “Take care of Number One.” Have a large heart, so that, though you care for yourself in spiritual things, and desire your own soul-prosperity, you may have the same desire for every other Christian man or woman.

Consider how you can help others, and in what way you can prosper them both in temporal things and in spiritual. You are members of a body, so one member is not to think for itself alone; the unity of the whole body requires that every separate and distinct part of it should be in harmony with the whole.

PRAY FOR THE NATIONS

This week, we’re praying for the Lafofa of Sudan.

According to the U.S. State Department, some areas of Sudan are very dangerous to armed conflict, civil unrest, crime, terrorism, and kidnapping. Only God can protect the Lafofa and the missionaries that he will send there.

Pray that God would end the violence and protect his people for the sake of the spread of the gospel.

RECOMMENDED RESOURCE

A really special new children’s book centered on God’s love

As a parent, I want my kids to feel safe and loved in our home — but even more than that, I want them to know that they can be safe and loved forever in Christ. And that’s the subject of Jesus Loves You More, a new board book by my friend Hunter Beless (who graciously sent me an early copy to review for you).

This book is really sweet — it assures kids of our love for them while ultimately pointing them to the incomparable love of God, which is deeper than the oceans, higher than outer space, and more beautiful than rainbows. The illustrations are really engaging for young girls and boys and the rhyming text is really tender and true, rooted in God’s Word and parenting wisdom. This new title is a board book, but kids of all ages will find something to connect with in this book.

My kids are loving Jesus Loves You More and I know that you will love it too. I hope you’ll pre-order a copy today (if you pre-order, you can get a free audiobook read by Hunter!)
