PRAYER FOR THE CHURCH (BY SPURGEON)

Prepare your heart to gather with your church on Sunday. Join Spurgeon in prayer for the saints and sinners who will hear God's Word at your church tomorrow.

Father, save any who will gather with our church this weekend who remain unreconciled to their God. Touch now, with your sacred finger, some careless heart that may be using even the house of God as a place for the gratification of curiosity, desiring no spiritual gift whatsoever; be pleased to lay your hand upon that heart and make it feel that God is near; and may conscience say, “Be sure of this, that the kingdom of God has come near to you.” And, oh, that there might not be the power to put aside that kingdom; but may the conscience now be so touched, and strengthened that the will may submit, and the judgment yield, and the affections bow, that God may reign over many a heart which before now has been a rebellious province of his domain.

Amen.

SPURGEON’S LETTERS

Spurgeon’s letters are really encouraging devotional readings. Today, we’ll read a note that Spurgeon sent to young people at his church on January 16, 1874.

Dear Young Friends,

I am writing in my chamber in Paris at midnight. I could not sleep until I had said to you, “Put your whole trust in Jesus at once. All the merit you lack, he will give you; all that you need of help in the heavenly life, he will bestow. Only believe in him. You who are saved, be sure to wrestle with God for the salvation of other young people, and try to make our new meeting a great means for good. You who are unawakened, we pray continually for you, for you are sleeping over hell’s mouth; I can see your danger, though you do not. It is therefore time for you to awake out of sleep. I send my earnest love to you all, praying that we may meet on earth in much happiness and then at last in heaven forever.

Your anxious friend,

Charles Spurgeon

WISDOM FROM SPURGEON: HOW CAN I GROW MY DESIRE FOR GOD?

This section of the Weekend Edition will include Spurgeon’s answers to timely questions. Respond to this email with your questions.

Let your desire for God’s glory be a growing desire. You blessed him in your youth, do not be content with such praises as you gave him then. Has God prospered you in business? Give him more as he has given you more. Has God given you experience? Praise him by stronger faith than you exercised at first. Does your knowledge grow? Then sing more sweetly. Do you enjoy happier times than you once had? Have you been restored from sickness and has your sorrow been turned into peace and joy? Then give him more music; put more coals and more sweet frankincense into the censer of your praise. Practically in your life give him honor, putting the “Amen” to this doxology to your great and gracious Lord, by your own individual service and increasing holiness.
